When finding hardly anything at all still makes you smile !
Just come back from 3 weeks in Canada..desperate to get the coil to the soil back in Costa del Suffolk..managed to squeeze in 4 hours on a permission today whilst fighting the jet lag… came away with NOTHING !!! 2 totally toasted halfpenny’s and and pouch full of lead/brass/copper/bronze nuggets of nowt ! But I still drove home with a smile (and a few more pennies of scrap towards the manticore fund
). What a great hobby we all have when you can wander about in the fresh air digging holes forgetting all the crap going on in the world with the constant optimism that that banging signal is not going to be another lump of smelt scrap or a furniture fitting or totally toasted coin. At no point today did I get the urge to give the old explorer the Fatima whitbread treatment across the field
. I’ve just spent 3 weeks in an R.V. touring the Rockies with the missus and 2 teenagers !!! It was great… but this blank session on the permission was the most stress less thing I’ve done in weeks
. Think of the blank sessions as relaxation time
. The wheat & barley crops are up.. some are disced or ploughed, not long till the beet is lifted… enjoy the rubbish days and the good ones become epic

Well that certainly made me smile, well said!
Had a 'funny' experience this morning. Up at sparrow's fart to hit a permission 90 min drive away. Rain most of the way and then all of a sudden, clear skies and sun. Get to the permission for 8am sharp and there are 2 deer, 2 pheasant and 2 red kites gliding majestically in the sky. It's going to be a good day I said to myself.
I should add that I just purchased an XP Deus Lite and having read the manual and familiarised myself with the new toy, I was ready to go. Or so I thought...
It was a new experience for me working on tone only but I was really relishing it and dug up a few shorties and 2 large bits of iron. 45 minutes into the morning and the detector goes silent. After a few minutes I worked out that apparently I hadn't charged the coil fully. All I could do was laugh, trudge back to the car and drive another 90 minutes home because of course I never thought I would need a backup detector or the charger. Lesson learned (or so I hope).
Good luck to all out this weekend!

We never know what the day will bring ![Laugh to Tears [49/]](./images/smilies/49_EmoticonsHDcom.png)
After days of work to repair my pickup that had been stopped for a month, I finally managed to get to a place difficult to reach without 4x4, at sunrise, and it was nice to find only two coins from the 70s, i felt free.
P.S.
Great upgrade Etruscan_Toad I wanted to buy the Deus but the issue of multiple recharge requires a patience that I don't have![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

When I have a poor session which is 99.9% of the time I always say to myself, this is my last target now and it's gonna be a Roman or saxon gold coin, needless to say it never has been but it doesn't half bring a smile to my face when I dig up that last piece of ****.
It's never stopped me planning my next outing though because there's many things to be enjoyed besides the finds

The charging is a bit of a novelty to me right now but honestly even after 45 minutes with the Deus, it is different gravy to my previous detector. I was having so many issues I spent half my detecting time cursing at my old machine!Sven@1970 wrote: Fri Aug 23, 2024 1:37 pm We never know what the day will bring

I plan to get out again on Sunday where of course I am convinced that I am going to find something extraordinary.

I think you nailed it there. Living in London, I find the tranquility of a field or forest a welcome respite from the constant noise of the city.Batman wrote: Fri Aug 23, 2024 1:39 pm It's never stopped me planning my next outing though because there's many things to enjoyed besides the finds![]()

In the history of lean spells, this lean spell I’m having now must be the biggest lean spell ever.
It’s been well over a year since I’ve found anything of note and three years since my last “grade A” find.
I sometimes forget why I’m out there tbh but I still keep soldiering on. I always have a good natter with the farmer (friend) his dog comes with me, I have amazing views, I see wildlife etc, and of course there’s always that chance

Never go out expecting anything, that way never disappointed.
The peace and quiet and being able to switch off from everyday life is priceless.
Cheers,
Dave.

I usually find one cracking find a year if I'm very lucky two but you don't know when that will be but thoroughly enjoy the search.theoriginalfatcat wrote: Sat Aug 24, 2024 9:03 am In the history of lean spells, this lean spell I’m having now must be the biggest lean spell ever.![]()
