The benefits of detecting extend way beyond the finding of a nice coin. Just getting out into the countryside and open spaces with some purpose is great.

A little bump to make sure that the newcomers are aware. Many members are facing added misery and stress due to the need for even tougher restrictions on travel and family contact, so this MDF "family" needs to pull together to support each other.

Thanks Damian, hope you are coping with all the added burdens of simply surviving in the present economic mess we all find ourselves in!
The ground is rock hard around my permissions here in Norwich Ventured out Friday morning and although the scenery and wildlife were super as usual, it was just a 2 hours foray, with a flask of coffee to cheer me up when the fingers numbed. 3 pairs of warm gloves ordered afterwards and now arrived!
I popped into one of the tenant farmers on the way back, very isolated and attractive in summer but not so in the cold winter. The couple were pleased to see me and we spent the best part of an hour chatting about how the landscape has changed over their 24 years farming the land, Liam

Hi everyone, with the recent passing of john viewtopic.php?t=157126 I have remembered this topic that I started a fair while back. Its difficult. Our forum members are here and then gradually they are not and we don't notice until we get some very bad news. Look back on the archived topics from members who have been the backbone of the MDF for years and then they vanish, unnoticed and eventually forgotten
Johns very sad illness went unnoticed at his own request and respected by his friends. But many others may welcome some occasional contact from forum colleagues. Illness can easily stop us getting our boots muddy, but its still good to keep in touch.
This forum stretches beyond physical detecting prowess out in the fields. Its also a wonderful detecting "community" of kind people who support each other in all sorts of ways. I have seen that many times when I was on the Mods Team
One of our stalwart members since 2011 is Ray (machinist) memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=3873 Ray has helped out at Forum Digs and other MDF events that I organised and I was humbled by how he gave his time and efforts to help those new to the hobby. Ray is now not in the best of health and whilst wishes of a fast recovery are sadly too late, I am sure he will welcome a private message or two from those members he "touched spades with" over the years. I am doing this without his knowledge and thus may receive a grand bollicking from Ray, but some recognition is due to this gentleman and I will lick my wounds afterwards! Liam

Sorry to hear that about Ray, Liam. I'm pretty sure it was Ray at the forum rally that partook in the discussion about "Who peels their mushrooms..?" That video is still on YouTube I believe, with KOALA asking the vital question! We all shared a good chat at breakfast time and I remember what a nice bloke he was. I wish you all the best Ray, and thanks for all that you've done for the forum.

To be honest Liam, never thought about chatting on here. I have terminal prostate cancer, that has spread to my spine and skull,as well as hips and pelvis. This aside, after a 40 year absence, this made me determined to have ''one last go' so to speak, so an all out concerted effort gained me 2 new permissions, one of over 700 acres, that I intend to try to detect on this Friday.
I have to admit to playing the sympathy card somewhat in gaining my sites, however, I feel I should get something out of the situation eh?

Anyway, I will post my finds, if any, as I know its going to be difficult physically, on here. I will also attempt to find folks to chat to,as I am sure there are members in similar situations as me, even if not terminal, as prostate cancer is sadly all too common nowdays.

So sorry to hear that Ray and well done on your positive attitude. As someone must have said at one time "Its not the length of the journey that matters, but what happens along the way"
I am one of those males with the enlarged prostate problem, so nightly wanderings I am regularly tested for PSA levels and all ok so far.
I see you are living down in Bedfordshire? I hope Lady Luck is hovering overhead for you. Good luck out on the hole digging front and do keep in touch with us, Liam
