Whitby ?

Post by AnnieC »

Hi Everyone

I'm off to Whitby at the end of this week and wondered if anyone has done any detecting on the beach there and if it is any good?

Any help/advice is much appreciated.

Cheers
Ann

Hi Ann, Whitby is a very small beach so on the positive side losses will be in a correspondingly small area; however, this may mean it has been well searched by others [42/]
If you have details, please consider a report which could be added to add to our sub-forum ...

Good luck and enjoy your day in Whitby it's a very nice location for a 'day out'. [81/]

I'm there now - sadly without my detector. I've not seen anyone on there in the last 3 days but I have seen people detecting up at Sands End before.
Be sure to check the Crown Estates map first - not all of Whitby beach is Crown Estate/detectable.
If I had my detector with me I'd go out on Saltwick Bay beach - not that I think it will yield more but there is a better chance of finding jet & fossils if that floats your boat.
Also Pizza West for pizza, & Abbey Microbrewery for beer.

I thought the main beach was out of bounds, you had to move more towards Sandsend. I did some down at Saltwick bay (just south)and tbh, it was terrible, although I am very new to the hobby, I found nothing except trash.

been to Whitby a few times, never detected there as we went to go fossil/jet hunting, but I have seen a couple of Detectorists detecting in the North side of the harbour at low tide on a couple of occasions. Good luck if you have a try there and be great to see what comes up.

Whitby to sands end beach is massive, had a few bits of gold and a lot of coins ... If you have time go and see Mulgrave castle in sandsend open Wednesday & Sunday

Well I managed to get a good few hours in, but I've got to be honest, I've never found a beach so spotlessly clean. Not that that's a bad thing but not a peep nothing, to the point I kept checking my detector in case it wasn't working.

So a great beach for families as its pristine, but not for detectorists.

I did find some Jet though, sea glass and a nice piece of amber so not all was lost.

On those days when finds remain elusive and I end-up with no finds at all or little of interest so long as the weather's been OK, I reckon it's been an otherwise enjoyable day.
Glad to hear you also enjoyed the day [81/] Cheers Eric

Maybe they have one of them beach cleaning machines, you'ld think there would be a few beer caps or ring pulls.

Jets as good as any coin find etc, and something synonymous with Whitby itself. [81/]
Maybe these maps and legends?
