How do you put multiple finds on one map?

Post by Pedrosky »

Something I’ve been wondering for a while now. I’m not very techy so hopefully someone has a way of doing this….

When I find anything half decent I take a photo of the find and a what3words reference point. I would like to plot all the finds on one map. Is this possible? Cheers [81/]

lots of way of doing but I like to use Google Earth, you can put down markers for individual finds or if you do a bit of googling you can create a spreadsheet with locations descriptions etc and upload it as a KML file, its not hard but you do need to understand what you are doing. Your what3words can be displayed as a latitude and longitude if you select the right settings in the app, this is what google earth (and any other mapping software) will need to let you plot them.

Your photos might also have location data embedded so it is possible to get these imported into mapping software (or even just displayed on your phone google maps) you won't have finds detail and any classification you might want but I'm not sure what you are really after?

I use a spreadsheet to record my hammered finds so I've got a record of which fields produce the most and to see if there are any hotspots or patterns, I use W3W to record the location in the field and update the spreadsheet when I get home, this means I can use my phone in the field on future visits to return to any good locations.

If you have an Android phone go to Settings, Location, App Permissions, then select "Allowed" for your camera, this will embed a location into every photo you take, then in the Gallery app you can display your pictures by Location by selecting the menu (3 horz lines) then Location.

A word of warning people can be caught out by having location data enabled on their phones so if you are up to no good and taking pictures at the same time you might be providing someone with evidence you might not want them to have! [88/]

Thanks LuckyB, very helpful. I’ll look into it. That’s basically the plan so that I can spot any patterns etc. Cheers [81/]
