Modern or Older? Decorated Silver Item for Idenfitication

Post by Panam39 »

I found this little silver item, somewhat decorated, and rather worn, while walking a ploughed field in S.E France. The find location is around 300m as the crow flies from a 12th century hamlet, with origins dating well into prehistory.

It's around 4.5cm long, 2 wide and has two miniscule holes set in four locations on the lip on the underside (see image 2), two on each side of the middle of the item, and two on the "lowest" side. It was at an angle in the newly ploughed field, catching the sun with a small section showing.

I can't make my mind up whether it's a modern or near-modern belt buckle (think clip belt) or something much older.

One thing for near sure; it's silver or silver plated, as the spit shine test came back positive.

My feeling is that it's not modern but I doubt that you will ever find out what it is/was. [81/]

Perhaps in it's complete form it was conical? I can only go by the appearance so in my view it's essentially base metal rather than silver which has been silver plated to enhance appeal. It's shape (conical when rolled?) plus the presence of 4 'mounting' holes suggests it may be a section of a mount for a swagger stick or similar or perhaps a partial decorative piece for some other form of mount.
The decoration is similar to items I've seen of the late Victorian/Edwardian period. It's a near impossible item to identify with any certainty but perhaps other suggestions may strike the right note?
My best suggestion for use rather than an ID I'm afraid [81/]
