Interesting lead object - any ideas please?
Found this interesting lead object today not far from a known Iron Age and Roman hill fort. I’m wondering if those marks have been scored purposely. Could be the Roman Numerals IX? Also discovered 2 holes that go all the way through. It weighs 325g. If anybody has any ideas or suggestions I would love to hear them, thank you very much

It looks more likely to be an improvised weight for closing a door or some similar practical purpose. probably not that old. ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

It's always worth weighing any shaped lumps of lead. It's surprising how often it turns out to be a common fraction or a round number of ounces and therefore almost certainly for weighing something.

Thanks Fred, I thought the Roman Numerals were IX but I’ve just realised that it could also be XI depending which way round you look at the weight, so the number is 11. It weighs just over 300g which is the equivalent of 11 Roman Unciae so I’m hoping it’s a Roman lead weight - just can’t find any weights similar to the one I found anywhere online. Thanks again for your helpfred wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 1:39 pm It's always worth weighing any shaped lumps of lead. I think it's an early incarnation of Johnny Vegas' little friend:

Sadly, that's what I thought too.

After checking Roman weights - the weight of it tallies with 11 Unciae which makes sense as it has the Roman numerals XI on it so could be a Roman weight
