Crotal Bell ID

Post by Etruscan_Toad »

Happy Easter all,

I found this crotal frag the other day. I know that crotals can tend to have fairly broad date ranges but I'd like to get a tentative date on it if possible.

The other 2 crotals I found at this permission were decorated whereas this one is plain, much smaller and seems to have a different metal composition to the others, as the patina is much more green. Any ideas on a date range?

It was found on a possible trackway so it would be good to know how far back its use goes.

Thanks again.

Having 2 so-called 'sound holes' in the top half usually means it's a one piece moulded bell probably from the 16th-17th century and the suspension loop seems to fit that date range, but I may be wrong!

Thanks for the info Phil, much appreciated.

Now I just need to work out if the dry valley was a track or the ridge above [49/]
