Silver Broach

Post by Derbyshire Hunter »

Hi All,

During a short, two hour session last week I found this. It's crazy, but I've been over this field/area dozens of times and so have my friends (using various machines). This time I was using my Nokta Legend on M3 with depth sensitivity at 28 ( the ID was 28, the same as a piece of gold foil about 1 ft away - I nearly passed over it completely). Anyway, soil conditions are really dry there and it was on an angle about 4 inches deep.

You can hopefully see a marking "Silver 5". There is a suggestion that this is because it is made from a German 5 mark coin sometime between 1901 and 1907. If anyone can verify that I would be really grateful?

Also, I have no idea what the gem is and/or wether it is artificial or real. Any advice on how to find that out would also be appreciated.

A Scottish style brooch. The silver 5 may indicate a lower purity? [81/]

Looks like silver. The 5 can refer to the size of the stone. Try searching for Cairngorn Silver Kilt Pins. Cairngorm is Scottish Citrine.

Sterling silver bar brooch. Silver items below a quarter of an ounce weren't required to be hallmarked. Late Victorian to WW2. [81/]
