Victoria Half Sovereign - Discoloured

Post by JamesH50 »

Hi, I recently found a Victoria Half Sovereign and have a couple of questions.
Has anyone had any joy removing discolouration from gold coins, or should this be avoided even on low value coins like this? I have read about baking power paste successes, but am unsure.
I know it's not that bad really, but if something can be done relatively easy i would like to know.

thanks

Afraid I can't help with advice on this, but I did attempt to clean some of my stuff for the first time today, thankfully very low value unimportant stuff cus it went wrong πŸ˜‚
Had a queen Vic half penny 1861, soaked in lemon juice for abit and lost all remaining details πŸ₯²

People forget that undiluted lemon juice is a powerful acid. Your loss today will hopefully be a learning point for others here. πŸ˜‰

Yes I certainly won't be taking the same risks if I find anything special πŸ₯²πŸ˜‚
But hey, bring on more of the same for me to practice with right!? 🀣

It will never have much more than bullion value anyway so you are unlikely to cause any serious problems cleaning it. [88/]

There is no going back!!...I have ruined many coins trying to clean them but it did`nt matter as none of them were anything special. I learnt a bit by doing it so that was good. Caution is key. What you have is a lovely coin and I would not get involved trying to improve the appearence unless I knew exactly what I was doing. Once your done your done and if you mess up that`s it!! I would be far happier to leave a coin that does`nt look a 100% than attempt to clean it and end up feeling sick!!...If in doubt leave it out...... [81/]
