the beach can be a very destroying place, it can knock you back if its bad, i agree perhaps get a few farms then do the beach in the winter months when a storm hits, with you living local you can keep an eye on the sand levels, and maybe get a dedicated beach machine,

thats so true dave am not interested in modern coinage and even rings i would love to find some old finds like roman or medieval i think ur right as av been on some land once befor and also just the testing of my machine in the garden was alot fun lol i dnt think the beach is my thing..my oldest find to date was a half pence 1943 coin and that was from my garden and i was so happy to find that!!

I recently went to Treasure Chest an Exhibition at Chester Town hall of md finds and club finds and there was one display as good as a second hand or antique jewelers window full of beach finds all from one guy and wow I was amazed at the amount of good quality old gold and silver jewelery really hundreds of finds. It was one of the other guys that was manning the next dispaly that told me that the display were nearly all beach finds. ps i don't know which beaches or what machine he uses. I was hoping beaches local to me.
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

Get round the farms uklad. Your area's dripping in history, I've had some good finds from there.

don't dismiss other areas too.
First thing I would buy is an OS map of your area scale 1:25000 2.5" to a mile or better.

Search every inch of that map with a magnifying glass and ring in red felt tip everything of interest ie Roman villas, roman roads, sites of antiquity, medeival villages, castles , barrows, lychetts everything .

Then see if you can work out what was going on back in Saxon. Roman, Medieval times.

Get a feeling for the local landscape.Where did they live ? how did they buy and sell produce? where did they get their water ? where would they have grown their foods and grazed their cattle etc.

Don't forget local footpaths, droves, bridge sites, river paths, hilltops fair sites all the places people would have been 100's of years ago.

good luck

all i can say is dont give up on the beach everyone has bad days or weeks even ,have a break for a few days and have a rethink of where to look !
as the other fella's have said it only takes some rough weather to move the sand and bobs your uncle.
also a few weeks back the beach was full of people when i arived so i decided to try some shale at the high water line where no one was about, i found loads of old flash bulbs ,some victorian spoons, loads of old tin film canisters one of them was full of some greace ? then i thought to myself years ago they were taking pictures, also perhaps having a picknic and a drink here !
i know there was nothing valuable there but it didn't matter to me,i would never have looked there normally ,like i said earlier try something different you might suprise yourself !
good luck gazza

Yesterday I had a chance to take over the role of the "beach brigand" again for 3 1/2 hours here in Germany.
Weather forecast told something about nice weather this Saturday. So I traveled to a small Baltic Sea island in East Germany together with my spouse to plunder a beach, which I never detected on before.

But after all this driving the first Euros got stolen already for parking, more for entering the beach.

I unpacked my detector and found myself very soon surrounded - by a bunch of curious children.
While they hunted me, I never found any coin - only bottle caps, jeans buttons and similar nice stuff. So the children horde was bored soon and went playing. This was the time for the first 60 Euro Cent.
What was that about good weather? Thick clouds came up, and a fine rain fell down. So much about weather forecast. Typical beach brigant weather - most people escaped, I had the beach almost for me alone (not too long).

After finding a while nothing, the coins came up. Final result:
24 Euro, 2,50 German Mark, 20 Pfennig from the DDR (old East Germany), 2 silver ear rings and one silver coated necklace pendant.

This made up for the traveling expenses. I would have searched longer than the time mentioned (visiting another beach), but there was a time reducing factor - the spouse :)

Best greetings from Germany
Olaf

P.S. Again struggled with the picture size rules - one tells me that the size should not be larger than 300 KiB, after changing this I get told, that the max size is 640 pix ... (Could you please show both rules in one message?)
