SOV GT or Explorer SE

Post by still trying tony »

Hi all i currently have a sovereign gt had it now for about 5 weeks and find it very hard to tell
the difference between the tones :(( i met a lad with a quattro and he showed me the id
numbers i know they are not 100% but i think with the tones and id numbers i might be in with a fighting chance..plus pin-pointing for me with the gt is a right pain i end up digging a 2ft round hole which is ok for now as i'm on a stubble field. Do you think it's an up grade or a down grade?
Thanks Tony

If you had asked me after I had been using my SE for a short time I would have said exactly the same.
Give it a bit more time, you should get used to the tones and get better at pinpointing. That has certainly been the case for me.

The SE is an upgrade but with the Sov as long as you are detecting in discriminate and it cuts out the iron not a problem.............
Take the timne to learn the machine you have before even thinking about upgrading. I know a few people who swop and change machines and allways complain that they don't find much. This has more to do with the operator than the machine. If you have the same problem in about 9 months then think about an upgrade.........

Hi Tony,
well me also owning a Sov GT well two of them, I also struggled with the tones, and to be honest still do, but slowly getting to understand what the GT is saying.... Dont give up hope yet, Yes it can be hard work and frustrating when you see others finding items as soon as they step into a field :)) but remember to sweep slow and keep it low, listen to the changes in tones and dig them all until to begin to associate the finds with the tones...

As for pinpointing when you have switched to pp mode in all metal slow right down with your sweep and you will hear the tone loudest when is almost above the find, place coil on the ground lightly then tease forward and backwards and listen for when the tone gets louder and where you located the loudest tone last time it should be centre of the find, depending on the coil you are using will determine if is dead centre of the coil or just in front of the coil bracket / support.....

Dont give up and happy hunting

Thanks Peasgood and thanks Craiga..It cuts some iron out but even small nails 1" long and about
5" deep some times 3" deep come through but when i get them out the holes and put them on the ground then go over them then it nulls them out :-/ so basically i'm still digging iron big lumps yeah ok but small nails and little bits is that right?

all detectors will pick up nails if the points facing up tony, what I loved about the GT when I had mine was, no coke, generally no iron, low tone leave ....mid tone dig, usually roman.....high tone dig dig.. long blow ya head off tone....buried coke can....WOW....... stick with it and enjoy....

I search in disc mode on the sov set at 3 use the notch aswell if you realy need it on a trashy site but once set dig everything with a solid tone that gets through its worth getting a wider spade i have the black ada i have used a safari for a while but i found the numbers and depth readings more to learn and slowed me down i just wanted a "dig or dont dig machine"but the sovereign will take time to master i think if you are only going to give a new machine 5 weeks to learn you may be on a never ending journey to find the right machine all the top end machines will take time to learn and bond with

But don't have the discrim higher than the notch, notch is only active if its set higher than the discrim, thats clockwise..... :)
