Several hours at Talacre

Post by Christoph1945 »

Turned out at Talacre for a couple of hours this afternoon but only turned up nails, bits of wire ,and screws. Spent half of the time chatting with members of the general public about metal detecting and what I may have found. Realy must learn to keep detecting and chat at the same time.

Big shaggy dog ran up and looked like he was going to pee on me detector. :( Little shaggy dog ran up and decided to help me dig for the target. :)

A ten year old youngster walked over and introduced himself and said he would like to know what I was doing. Once I had confirmed that he had an addult close by with him; I allowed him to assist in incovering a couple of targets. Together we dug up what I believed were a couple of spent, copper, bullets that had burst upon contacting hard objects. The youngster inspected the said items, looked at me, and asked if they were English or German. :-/

I have photographed two of the bullets, but am somewhat puzzled by the one on the left.
I thought that it looked to be a rather small caliber but am not well up on the matter. I thought that maybe Chopper could cast his eye upon them and educate us.

Hi William,

thanks for the reply. The one on the left looked quite tiny to me and I was rather surprised to think that it could be of military origine.

Thanks John, that would perhaps fit in with the history of the Talacre area. During WWII the beach and dune areas were used for target practice by British and American fighter aircraft. I don't know the exact location of the targets but will be having breakfast with some Talacre pensioners on Monday morning and perhaps one of them will be able to fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge of the area.

Yes this is one of the drawbacks of beach detecting in a public place, you get all sorts of people coming up and talking to you. I often give finds away to families who have watched me dig them up and they go away happy. Not always so hard though, a couple of weeks ago I got two young Italian female stunners chatting me up, certainly put a spring in the step of this 60 yr old for the rest of the day B-)

Keep at it mate, beaches are like that, one minute you are digging up stuff all over the place then a tide brings in fresh sand and you spend weeks finding nothing. All part of the game.

John

Spent about five hours on the beach at Talacre to day. Stuck with the same area as yesterday but didn't improve my luck any! :( Turned up some more fifty caliber copper bullets, along with some more .303's. Plenty of odd scrap + a large spoon and a dinner fork. :-/ Plenty of small targets in both dry and wet sand. I continue to be amazed at the CS4PI and its ability to spot the smallest of metal pieces.

At present, I don't mind digging the scrap; it gives me plenty of practice for my digging tecniques.
The investment in a Pro Pointer speeded things up and improved matters no end. I have a number of small iron lumps encrusted in concretia and I am presently looking for a way of liberating them from the darn stuff without dammaging them. At times, I think that someone must have seeded the beach with nails, screws, tent pegs, and bolts. :(

Oh, I almost forgot the 1p piece. :D
