Deus in water!!!

Hi all, hopefully some of you Deus users can answer my question from personal experience.
I am looking to replace my detector this week and am undecided between the E Trac and Deus, I know the ins and outs of both through research and would be more familiar with the Minelab set up.

I hunt both land and beach and the Minelabs excel in both but I find myself attracted to the Deus and wonder if the underwater issues with the Deus coil and losing connectivity in just a few inches of water has been a problem for any of you here and how you overcome it, also how long does it take the system to recover and reconnect itself after you move from water to dry situations.

On some sites it has been played down but others it is highlited so I dont know what to think, then I find a thread and link from one of our members showing how to rig a piece of wire from coil to above water level in order not to lose connection!
I like a lot about the Deus but this would be a major issue for me unless it can be easily sorted out.
Obviously they both are excellent but expensive machines and I hope someone can shed some light so that I can make a final decision.

If you phone Nigel Regtons McBain, there's a mod for the deus coil for underwater detecting, think its something you can do yourself......

Thanks for that Kmarsh, I think its the one where you can attach the wire like a snorkel but I will check, appreciate your help

Hi McBain,

I would probably opt for the E Trac given that Minelab's multifrequency machines are already established as being good on the wet sand and shallow wading. Thats not to say the Deus wouldnt be any good in these areas, but there definitely isnt as much info on it out there being used in this terrain as of yet to properly gauge that it excels in these areas. With having had a Minelab before too you are bound to get to grips with it quite quickly which equals more detecting time aswell!

Thanks Stephen, You are right there isnt much difinitive info on many areas of the Deus such as depth, water use etc, probably due to the newness of it and people havent had proper time to fully assess the deus. Saying that some of the users have had cracking finds and others have had bad experiences but only time will tell . I am leaning towards the E Trac at the mo unless someone can shed more positive light on its abilities.

have tried this mod before on my bro's machine before i got mine as i was curious to how it would perform and yes it does work. It was only in a bowl of water with a coin in the bottom but the wire trick Did seem to work. Will be taking it to the beach this week hopefully and testing it properly to see what the stability and depth are like compared to the etrac i normally take.

while looking through the programs for beach last night i noticed they seemed a softened version of the etrac's. They seemed to be set for a general anywere in Britain beach mode and heavily toned down sacrificing depth for a quieter ride so I've customised one called shallow beach for picking out small stuff from between iron at 6 inches down and another called deep beach that will hopefully do What the etrac Could. Will be interesting to see If they work.

couple of other interesting things is that the "deep on" setting is fully adjustable compared to the "deep on" on the etrac thats a one push button affair and cant be adjusted.
I was also suprised the deus will pick up gold chains were as the etrac was blind to them. This i believe is Prob due to the coke being descrimed out on the etrac by default for a quieter ride thus sacrificing small gold on the lower end of the gold scale.

Have used the deus on the wet yes it is ok, but the etrac was a lot deeper, but i found just as much gold with the deus as the etrac , I find that the deus is a lot better on the dry sand, but now I uses the gpx on the wet all the time now.

Cheers Ants, I have gone for the E Trac as there seems to be less trouble with it and the FBS appears to cope better on changes from one area to another, after using the Safari it seems the natural progression to move to the E. I`m sure the Deus excels in other areas but a lot of members have mentioned the depth issue so for that amount of money I will try to minimise the grief. Thanks for all the replies and info, I`m sure the thread will benifit Deus owners anyway
