seatown dorset

Post by sandman »

i looked in on this place in the summer , i thought ill give that ago , a pebble beach like chesil beach with two small areas with people on , i thought great ill detect those areas first then follow the tide out . they produced 1 junk ring , a bit of broken gold ring , and 1 fishing weight that was 3hr no coins i was panicking i put £2 in the honesty car park . by now the tide was falling so i could get down the slope a bit , then a chap came along who was doing some fossil hunting and stopped for a chat , he said last week where was a bit of a storm and one bank of stones had washed down the slope so i should be detecting there , with that knowledge i agreed and asked do you detect , yes he said me and my wife done this beach a couple of weeks ago , well i hope he spend that money on something good because I'm £2 down . i carried on 6hr in total my arm , my legs i was cream crackered ,then a signal a shiny coin on the surface it glistened like gold , it looked like gold , i thought it was gold , i put it away and circled the area with a smile on my face no more signals , back to the van and had another look yep its gold got home look at this love its gold , let me see , you stupid man its a halfpenny there's britannia , had another look , o yea . you see what a lack of coins can do to a man , i hope that couple are happy with themselves :))

Me and some mates were fishing off of Filey Brigg many years ago and were loosing weights and tackle at an amazing rate and wondering what we were snagging on. Near the end of the session along comes a lobster boat hauling his pots in right at the distance we were loosing stuff.

Oh good the fisherman are finding our weights and throwing them back to us, no they aren't they're throwing them AT US!! Duck Lads !!
It's all the Headless Hunters fault !!

Just wanted to check that are you aware that Seatown Beach is privately owned? and as such you need to get permission from the land owner as it is not crown owned foreshore, the owner has recently changed to the son who is not happy about the beach being used by anyone, let alone us lot. :(
Its a shame as it has been used by the public for generations, anyone know if there is any kind of common usage law that mite be in our favour? like foot paths?

regards
Leigh

Hi Leigh, thanks for pointing this out and the information, hopefully anyone thinking of going there will now see your post

As always to anyone reading this, it is paramount when going somewhere new to check that it is covered by the foreshore map and if not that the correct permission is gained first

Just wanted to add that on or in the shingle there are large pieces of concrete road, with steel rods in, these where laid along the beach during the second world war for the removal of shingle for runways and aerodromes, there are also a few tank traps that pop up near the river mouth when the shingle has been dragged out after a big storm.
Under the shingle is a blue lyas clay bed which holds loads of finds, this has been uncovered a couple of times that I can remember there are even copper nails down there from when they used to burn the remains of old clinker built boats on the beach.
Just a bit of local knowledge.

So you think that the £2 was not well spent !, by the amount of weights you have there alone i think you got a bargain. Alan .. ;)

Thanks for the update on the access to the beach. A real shame if the son doesn't want any one using it. As mentioned by others here the fishing weights alone ar worth a few quid in their own right.
