What have you found?

Post by davekane »

Hi, I was wondering what other people have found on beaches in England if you do not count decimal coins or modern jewellery. I've been detecting since March of this year and only on the local beaches in the North East of England. I am hoping that metal detecting will get me some nice old coins it seems that people who detect in fields pick up roman and medieval coins by the handful. I've done some reading Edward Fletcher books "Metal Detecting on the coast" and the "How to read coasts/estuaries/land" and of course spent hours on the internet trying to find stuff out. I feel like I have had some real success finding things with musket balls a 1797 penny and pre-decimal 20th century coins. but basically these were found in one specific place on the coast and only when there is a very low tide. So now as a beginner I am feeling quite hyped up about the winter months which are supposed to be the best time for beach detecting. On American forums they are always showing their beach finds and when you introduce yourself from England they are jealous of the old stuff that they think we find. So I think it would be good just to find out what older stuff can be found on British beaches. It will give more experienced detectorists a chance to tell us about what they found and when they found it is winter really going to be this great time of easy pickings that most books/articles seem to make out?

The beaches along my coastline are very deep sand which is topped up every year for the Holiday makers which is great :) but it doesnt really help my cause with finding old bits :(
I might travel a bit this year to a few estuaries I know and see how I get on.
Cheers

Hi there ! I live pretty near to the beaches of West Cumbria , but on the whole my finds are pretty poor . I do find a lot of WW11 bullet cartridges as they used the beach for target practice !! No coins as yet but did find an old buckle . Weirdly i still havent found any coins on the beach...not even decimal coinage . I use an Ace 150 which is ok but to really be successful on the beach i'd prob need a more powerful machine .
Happy hunting !

The Beaches in the south ie, Sandbanks, Bournemouth etc are as mrix said are topped up every year so you find nothing, best time for a beach search is after a stormy and windy night when all the top sand as been blown away, if the sand that your searching is black thats where all the goodies are, go as early as you can the morning after the storm, good hunting.

Years ago I did a pebble beach near Plymouth and found a few modern spent military rifle cartridges which slightly bemused me as it was a public beach. I found out later that the RM had done a training exercise there a few weeks before in front of Prince Philip. Only other things I found that day were ring pulls and bottle tops. :(

Hi all
I have only restarted the hobby since stopping though lack of finds and interest few years ago. A friend of mine wanted to start up so I have been going out with him to the local beach. So far we have been out around 10 hours by doing 2 hrs per night for past week and at the moment im up to £3 in loose change a nickel spoon and a 1964 penny (that was a pain to find about 12" down). Im using a viking vk40 and im just getting used to it, though I have read its not the best beach machine (cannot use it on wet sand) , its great in the dunes where lots of pocket spills round camp fires happen. Im thinking of buying the c-scope pi machine to hit the water line as I have read thats the place to be. Any advice for a newbie
