Torbay beaches metal detecting

Post by beachjon »

Hi all

Does anyone have information on metal detecting on beaches in Torbay. Torquay, Paignton etc as they are not marked as crown estate. I have metal detected there for a few years now with no hassle at all but if you had to get permission where would you have to go, or to who.

Keeping on this theme, there are many beaches that are not marked on the crown estate map and are not marked as private but where would you start with regards permission?

I was in a club years ago and just returning to detecting properly so looking to join the east Devon /Exeter club. Any members here but it seems that for non crown estate beaches that are not private, the council seems to be the first port of call.

hehe. i can see fun on the beaches this year with the increasing amount of skint folk with detectors lookin to be first on the patch. do they blow a whistle at 4pm to start the minelab 100m fast sweep contest? must admit the beach where i detect is gettin busy with detectors its cleaned out at the moment and needs re-filling roll on summer. best get that 15 inch wot coil for the summer methinks.

Never done the beaches myself, have that in mind for the future but not scooping up after the daytrippers. I chatted to an old chap at Eastbourne once, out for a stroll on the beach after dinner and he really appreciated the chance to get some cash to supplement his pension. He had an old C Scope but was using it successfully, probably knew the beach very well, chatted about the groynes, tides, different types of sand and so on. I had seen some very old Victorian photos of the beaches and we were on what had once been a thriving holiday spot, with a long vanished pier. When I mentioned that, the old chap nodded wisely, probably knew exactly where to go.
What happens when a lot of detectorists arrive at the same time? Do some try to claim "their" patch based on some type of seniority or something, or is it "Coils At Dawn" =)) =)) =)) =))
Good luck to you all anyway, Liam B-)

Seems an odd arrangement around Torbay, it's not Crown Estate but the Council make no mention of owning it on their website which I would have thought they would if they did.

Their website says they manage various beaches stretching from Maidencombe which is Crown Estate down to Brixham which is also Crown Estate but there are bits in between which are not Crown Estate.

There are also lots of SSSI’s along this stretch of coast, Babbacombe, Roundham Head, Slatern Cove, Berry Head to name a few. Permission can be granted from Natural England for SSSI’s but you need permission from owner as well.

Could try phoning Torbay Beaches on 01803 207975 or Natural England on 0845 600 3078 and ask them who the owner is.

Odd that other Mders have an ‘arrangement’ with the life-guards. If it is council owned I bet the Council has no knowledge of this arrangement. CHALLENGE IT!!

It is an odd set up in the Torbay area but on and off I have detected on the beaches in Torbay for many years with zero trouble. Torre abbey, Paignton, Goodrinton and Preston beach. I never went when the beach was packed but never have any issues. Berry head is off limits but the beaches seem fine.

20 years use without challenge is prescriptive use I think?
You can register this with land registry if the beach is private.
Not sure about a beach that already has public access or are crown owned, but it's worth considering?
