XP Deus first run
XP Deus first run
Hi,
Firstly I am a complete novice and need to read up on my machine a lot more but regardless this situation baffled me.
I took my Deus out on its first run Saturday, the ground I was detecting on was pasture. I tried 3 presets, Basic 1, Basic 2 and GM Power. I had a few useless finds, shotgun cartridge, horseshoe, wire, iron rod, nails etc etc but often I was getting a high pitched signal and after digging up to 15" down I could not find anything. This happened around 4 times, I was getting a strong high pitched audible tone, and using the pin pointer on the Deus I was getting a strong tone from the centre of the hole but my Garett pin pointer didn’t pick anything up and I couldn’t dig any deeper as there’s no way the Deus was detecting lower than 15", is there?? The guy I was with had an e-trac and when I asked him to run over the same spot he got no signal on any settings yet the Deus did. Can anyone give any idea as to what was happening here?

That would be deep iron =)
This is my metal detector
There are many like it, but this one is MINE.
My metal detector is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.
My metal detector without me is useless. Without my metal detector, I am useless....

best thing to do is keep digging until you reach the target then assess What your hearing. Normally I've found it to be big iron but who's to say it isnt a hoard. The bigger the mass the more it will scream even when its deep. I hear What your saying about it giving a good signal so it must be a good target but its Not always the case as iron Could contain tin, zinc or any other good metal. Hope that helps
Xp deus
So on dry pastured land jsut how deep can the XP go? Is there a depth that I should admit defeat at? I still dont undertand why the e-trac didnt pick it up even when it was put right into the hole.
to quantify what you hear it is best to check the horse shoe readout if it is on the left walk away if it is on the right dig
what id number were you getting as you could have been picking up coke although your pinpointer should have found that hmmm a bit of a mystery
if no id number to start with you should have got one when you started digging and if it is low i dont bother
you havent any steel in your boots have you?????? all these things have to be eliminated tell us if it happens again and we will relook at your situation

It is most probably my lack of experience with the unit, I think ill have a thorough read of the manual and after another test run ill report back if I am having similar issues. Cheers
funny you should post this i was out with my friend who also has a desus, we were on wetish pasture land, when he hit a good signal 55 -65 mark on the read out, and started to dig now he has the big coil fitted two, and was about two and half feet down, digging into wet clay, and still no target, my detector couldent get anything even in the hole, nether of our pin-pointers could get anything ether.
we kept at it for ages digging down deeper and deeper into wet clay, desus still reading good signal, pinpointing on the middle of hole but still nothing, in the end we gave in as i hate wet clay and it was starting to rain and a big whole was developing
i still wonder what it could of been!!!

i think the problem lies with the iron bounce from low numbers to high numbers in the 90's and Sometimes stays in the 90's. Now seeing as really big silvers hit the 90's then is it worth notching out the high numbers around big silvers or are you gonna miss something. As my notching program is pants (discussed in an earlier thread) then Thats Not an option but using tones Could be. Maybes time to do some tests to see If this would work.
Xp deus
the etrac is a very deep seeker and i have a feeling it Did see it but descrimed it out being iron thus giving No signal. Only a guess without knowing What program he was using.

Hi, I also have the Deus. Read the manual slowly and try to absorb what it is saying, get out n the garden and try things out so that you can tell the difference between signals and the various programmes. GMP and factory settings should be a good starting place for you. Hampshire Hound has made an interesting users guide for the members and this is the link, scroll down and click on the file;

This months Searcher also has an article on the Deus, written by Mick Turrell of Leisure Promotions, well worth a read.
Good luck with the Deus, but do have a look through the many Deus topics already on show in the XP Metal Detectors menu on the left as many of your questions will be answered in there, always good to chat but it may save you some time
All the best, Liam B-)

Deus, WSi's - In the end we will regret the chances we didn't take, the relationships we were afraid to have and decisions we waited too long to make .. Lewis Carroll
It wasnt my boots, definately checked that one although I bet its easily done! The e-trac was run through a couple of programs with no discrimination and didnt pick up anything so that part is still confusing.
ok if you get an id number straight off with the deus you know the target is maybe four to five inches no more so remember this and it will help you not going down 2 foot
it will probably have been off to the side in the side wall so check next time if the pro pointer doesnt go off lengthen the pro pointer as described in the garrett pro pointer TIPS by turning the pointer off and then on holding it seven inches from the spade this will help you find it
go around the walls with the pro pointer if the deus is saying it is there then it will be

Sorry Sugar, but that is misinformation!I regularly pull hammies up from between 7"& 9" on pasture, with good solid number indicaton.sugar wrote:ok if you get an id number straight off with the deus you know the target is maybe four to five inches no more

Thanks Sugar that is really helpful especially the tip on the pointer, I did wonder if it was in the side wall but the pointer just wasnt finding it, may have been an inch or two out of range.
