I've never owned a detector which pinpoints so easy. When you find a target, just keep swinging in shorter side to side movements while backing up your coil. As soon as the coil goes silent, you can count on the target being right in front of it. You can do this from various angles to increase the accuracy. Hope this helps!!

Can I ask why wouldn't you pinpoint? I only ask as i'm new and would never find all the rusty nails I have today without pinpointing. Ive reduced the dustbin size holes I dig as i'm learning to pinpoint. Am I on the right track?

Amanda
P.S. Ive bought a pinpointer to help pinpoint the pinpoint

I think what Kmarsh means is instead of using the machines built in pinpoint feature, is to use the method that detectorist has explained in his post....

Hi Amanda...
After 34 years I still use the pinpoint function on my machines...it's there for a purpose to stop you digging huge craters in the ground and with some machines(like the Minelabs) the sound will increase as you centre the target...it's good detecting practice to use the machine functions properly...well done...
Jim.

I've watched peacehavens on youtube showing how to use the built in pinpointing mode on Deus and it looks great. It looks in fact to easy not to bother with. I can'e remember which of his over 400!! vids it is on but well worth watchiing if you can find it. Peacehavens is a youtube/Deus legend, so much knowledge expertly shared and always worth looking at.

If you use the pinpoint button always swing away from the target b4 pressing it. if you do it over the target you may get an overload tone " your ears won't like it ".... then you may lose the target also.......

I too use the backing away from target til signal disappears at front of coil then insert spade about an inch back because it is SOO quick and simple - needs no button pressing and works for me - if I have a bigger than usual or dodgy signal I back away til signal disappears then slice my spade point in a couple of inches then walk 180 degrees opposite and around the signal and swing til it disappears again and insert the spade at the front of the coil - you now know the maximum diameter of hole that you need to dig - and you have also re-affirmed the signal integrity and know the target is between the 2 spade cuts.
With the walk away til signal gone method I can now usually keep my average sod diameter to around a very acceptable 5 or 6 inches with the standard coil (Deus)- I use this method on all my detectors even my slow Quattro and it very rarley lets me down and then the propointer comes into its own...
