Hi Barry, if you are caught I hope you like French (prison) food =))
Apparently detecting on any beaches around Dunkirke or Normandy is strictly forbidden :(
Check with french customs to see if you are even allowed to bring a detector into France or you could start off in a bad way.
Heres an interesting link and read

Enjoy your holiday.

Be very VERY careful. The French have really come down hard on metal detecting and relish catching people doing it.

All beaches with anything to do with WW2 are strictly off limits to MDers and, to make matters even stricter, the French authorities recently made it so that all relics from either WW1 or WW2 are property of the state. This means that, even if you pick something up off the surface without any digging at all, and get caught with it, you will be subject to a hefty fine and 2 weeks in a nice French jail. If you leave the country with a relic and either set of customs get you, you've had it.

I know of examples of people having their detector, equipment and car confiscated, a thousand euro fine and a stay in a French jail,. all for the sake of a couple of cartridge cases.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news......
