Post by poppymai »

hi all! firstly i hope i posted this right and the pics ok? let me know if it isn't!!! can you help i d these 2 items at all? the button and thimble i know (just put them in for size). on the field i am detecting, so far has turned up many finds including musket balls, buttons, ect. coins.. have found henry v111 halfgroat, elizabethan sixpence dated 1580, and george 111 sixpence dated 1816, yesterday i found these two strange items.. one looks like the end of an axe though it is broken, looks to be bronze??? and the other curious item has a sort of hook, is decorated with green and blue squares with a red band through the middle and this pattern is on both sides..also there are glints of gold so it must of been gilded. has anyone found something like it before or have any idea what it is , how old??? the button (royal marines) and thimble are just for sizing but were also found in this field. hope the picture is seeable? many thanks! :)

thanks chaps. i took these items to a right nice chap and he i d the axe thing and indeed it seems to be an axe dating between 1000-700 bc! got to record it with FLO but she isnt in her office till 11th october. but if this is an axe from that period then its my oldest find ever!! the other item he is taking with him to a detectorists club meeting tonite at colchester he reckons it is possibly medieval! and thanks to jayreef for that link showing one!! seems to be virtually the same thing! thanks very much you guys! for all your help! =D>

It certainly looks just like the item indicated in Jay's link. If this is the case, and with the colouring intact, it must be an exceptional find indeed. Nice one, Poppy. :)
Will I? Won't I? What kind of silly question is that?
