Frustrating 2 hours.

Post by janner53 »

Hi All ::g ,
After dropping my wife off this morning i had a couple of hours to myself until picking her up again, so decided to detect a tiny local beach. I have gone to detect it before but its that tiny when you get a dozen people on it its full.
Anyways, was empty but for the odd dog walker, so gave it a go.

... 'ell, what a frustrating time i had, no pull rings, no bottle tops, just tons of the stuff in the pic, sure its aluminium. Did manage a 1939 sixpence and a 20p, but that ally was all over the beach, some of it so tiny was hard to see. No matter where i put the detector it was picking this stuff up.

I kept saying to myself what I have read here on the forum, clear the rubbish away and it will reveal the good stuff, well, i tried but it was too headbanging. Need a couple of months solid detecting to make an impact.
Will not be going there again in a hurry, cepts maybe after a good winter storm.

Hi janner53
That melted alloy stuff looks like left over's from incendiery bomb's but not sure. I found a piece on my beach which was used as a firing range during the 1940's.
Nice sixpence and twenty pence too good finds.
Happy hunting :D

Hi Richie, ::g.
Thanks for that info, you could be right as i believe this beach was also a firing range. I remember reading something ages ago how if you look carefully at the rocks around this beach you can find shrapnel embedded in them, from where the ships used to fire at targets along this bit of coast.

Yup Richie, that one sure looks the part...bliddy stuff.

I manage to get out again this evening for a couple of hours in my little wood.
Pic shows two 1928 sixpences that came out together, cleaned up lovely.
6 X Copper coins, cleaned one up just to have a look at it.
The ring is nothing special, looks like tin.
A thruppeny bit.
There's 9 X 1/2p, they all came out within a 4 foot square of each other.
A 2p and 4 X 1p.
Couple of buttons.
Bullet cartridges.

A lot better than this morning :D ::g

Hi Richie ::g, Blowed if i can see any date on them. Where on the cartridge is it normally marked?.

Hi Tanky ::g , Yup, we go out to our digs full of anticipation of finding lots, with that best find in the back of our minds. Maybe that trip out is all you can get in for a while so want to make the most of it..... and when it turns out a bad day... well, if your like me, i feel the world is against me, even my detector hates me.....
:D , ok, maybe its not that bad, but know what you mean mate.

Hi janner53
The date should be stamped on the base of the cartridge also a code to where it was made.
Click on this link below to RRPG's post it will explain all about headstamps. ;)

Looks like the cartridges you have look like .303's

Richie, I've cleaned two and can read ... R /I \ L 35 VII and R /I \ L 36 VII... on them.
Seems that's all that is marked on them.

Thanks for that link, very interesting ::g
