Any point in going to the beach out of season?

Obviously going to the beach after a busy day gets you new finds, going after a storm may get you some old finds.

But what if you go to say Bournemouth beach in the winter, after everyone has already been, detected, and gone? No storms...

Do you always find something? Or is it just an exercise in cleaning the beach of bottle caps?

Hi, I have been to the Bournemouth beach when the wind has blown away the soft surface sand and was shocked to find many £1 coins just resting on the surface B-)
There is miles and miles of beach to cover, I think many tend to detect around the obvious places like the piers etc but many of the more obscure sections still produce and tend to build up with goodies over time .
Give it a try see how you get along

The beach is like a big bran barrel it is just full of goodies the winter can be better for finds if you know how to read the beach and the weather patterns.

As I live near Oxford the beach is a long trip, so more likely I turn up on a random day for a bit of peace and quiet!

The only time Ive tried the beach was swanage for a short hour and a half after the curfew and before it got dark. (whats with the permit saying 6.30pm and the signs 6pm?!). Guess the limit will be over at the end of this month for the winter. Thought people were out with their detectors at 6pm I noticed.

Places like calshot are the easiest to get to, but thats private. Lymington looks hard to fathom from beach access (to be frank I didnt know there was one, Ive only seen the quay and the marina).
So Southbourne and Bournemouth beachs are probably the best bet.

Do any of you beach guys use a PI detector? My MXT Pro VLF was not happy on the wet sand at swanage, but many others say theirs works great so I guess its not necessarily the wet sand but the particular beach. Worked really well on the dry.

Dont need free parking...Im 2 mins away from the beach, and within 10 mins of half a dozen more...oh and I pick my new Sov GT up tomorrow....

No the challenge is to get a free parking space at a popular beach in the early morning, have a few hours detecting then sell your place to a tourist for a few quid later B-)

I have just joined, so bear with me, as a complete beginner what sort of detector should I be looking to buy? how much should I pay for a usable second hand one? All suggestion gratefully welcome. John.
