GMP Basic (program 1) Advice required ?

Post by gazzer55 »

As I have never used a Deus machine before was I actually using it correctly.
I had the machine on GMP basic 1 (program 1).

01. When sweeping across the ground no numbers appear on the control box in the middle square until you actually hit a target (is this correct) ?

02. The machine sounded silent until a target was hit, is this normal and is this because iron is discriminated out ?

03. If iron is discriminated (10) do you lose any important signals in this program set up ?

04. Lee B mentioned putting GB on tracking.... How do you achieve this ?

Sorry for the basic questions but any help much appreciated.
Thanks to everyone for the great advice and help ::g ::g ::g

Hi Gazzer.

1) Yes this is correct. If you pass over no metal then no number will be shown.

2) Havin a silent machine is fine until you hit a target. it shows you are not on mineralised ground. If you were the machine would be chirping its heart out in the background.

3) I dont dig anything under 20 (thats just me though). So having 0-10 discriminated out you wont be missing anything of any importance.

4) Unless the ground you are covering is showing large fluctuations then just stick to manual tracking. I leave it on 90 and only make an adjustment if the lower figure is more than 7 above or below the upper figure.

lastly as you are new to the Deus you may or may not know that the horse shoe to the left of your display is your depth gauge. The more black a target fills the closer it is to the surface.

If you ever get a good 2 way signal that just clips the top of the horseshoe but gives no numbers dig it. :)

XP spent a huge amount of time setting up the Deus. basic one can be a killer program. Don't go messing with it untill you know the machine well.

I hope this helps.

Remember thats its your ears that you should trust.

Sometimes a deep item will register on the headset but without a display number showing up.

As you get closer to the find the screen will register the find numerically. ;) Jerry.

I don't dig anything less than 40 or 45 as it is either just coke or sometimes small bits of aluminium :-O ;;z

Hmm. I would have to disagree with your choice. Mainly because on a fair few occasions a nice sounding but low registering signal has increased when ive started digging. mid 20's have suddenly gone up to 60's after disturbing the soil.

I really think you could ultimately be missing a lot of good finds by not digging until the mid 40's.

Hi Glen.

You will know what im going to say as a fellow deus user. You can get a signal in the 20's that can sound crisp and you can get one that has those underlying grunts. These ones I will leave. Its the low signals in the 20's-30's & 40's that give a clear both way signal that I dig. They are the ones that quite often end up giving much higher numbers.

When I first purchased my Deus a few months back I would religeously go on numbers alone. But now after around 60-70 hours of use I go by what I hear and the numbers on the display are purely as a checking device.

My last detector was not an XP machine so the tones were all very alien to me.

This brings me onto my next point. If I can give any advice to somebody thinking of buying a Deus that is not currently using an XP machine please do not buy the lite version. Apart from the obvious lack of customisation that you get from the full package that includes the controller the tones given could well confuse the hell out of you.

I must admit I was advised to go for the lite by a well known retailer but after a chat with a few other detectorists decided not to and bought the full package and im glad I did.

The Deus is an absolute cracking machine. I class myself as a novice and yes initially the machine was a bit of information overload but I would say after around 30 hours of detecting you will be at 1 with the machine.

Final statement. Don't become a slave to Gm Power. The machine is so much more than that. You wouldn't buy a Sky HD box and not watch HD channels so why buy a Deus and only use a tiny percentage of its potential.

Hi Ian, an interesting read. I like you tend to dig all "clear" signals regardless as what's shown as the ID number (above 28) as the tones with an underlining grunt tend to always be rubbish. The ID target info, IMHO is not great. If the finds are near to the surface then it's normally accurate, how ever if the finds have any depth to them then i find its nearly always wrong for example low numbered targets become high, high numbered targets become low :(
As a new user to the Deus I must admit to using GMP in 11khz nearly all of the time, I did get some custom settings from a kind member on here, however I find them a little confusing to use at the moment so have saved them for when I am a little more in tune with the machine. I would be interested to know what settings you recommend Ian? Any suggestions would be great ::g
