Is it safe?

Post by Tonyh16 »

Found this the other day and not sure if it is military or just a solid metal object produced for some other reason.
There appears to be a grove at the top which means it may have been a thread but too rusted to tell. Very heavy for it's size so must be iron or lead alloy?
Any ideas much appreciated as not sure whether to clean or leave well alone!
Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony, without knowing it is best to treat it as un-safe and get it down the Garden ::g

I am sure one of the experts will be along soon to help ID it

I would definitely agree with Dave8472 - it certainly looks like some sort of ordnance/military type weapon - to be safe - please leave well alone until certain. I am sure someone with this type of knowledge/expertice will put you on the right tracks. Better to be safe than sorry!! :(

Yes it does look like a 20mm bullet , you can see the grove where the remains of the copper drive band was . I found two of these and they are not safe to keep as they can still be LIVE and unstable.

It is indeed a 20mm projectile. These came as solid shot, high explosive and incendiary. In its current condition, unless you can see that it is hollow inside, you have to assume it is unsafe and treat it very carefully. Think of it as a small but very short tempered grenade and dispose of it safely.

I'd get in touch with your local authority and get it disposed of properly ::g
