CTX 3030 / Etrac Question

Post by Tomo »

This is aimed at the ctx or etrac given there set up more or less the same on the descrim front. Often people have said for Roman sites they only descrim a few blocks out on the bottom right hand corner.
My question is this. Has anyone actually found anything near the bottom line worth keeping. I'm presuming some poor Roman bronze's might hang around this line and I know some people have said they have found cut quarter's around the bottom of the screen. I normally use 2 tone with the low tone at the 28 line.

Hi Tomo, on a friends Roman site there were lots of tiny fragments and coins, I did have to reduce discrimination as it was such a difficult site to get a signal on, but no good signals dug were down the bottom, strange thing is no matter what the signals (finds) they are always about on the 12 line or above, in ground finds and air tests for me

These are to two extremes of discrimination I use on different patterns

And this is the one I use the most on my sites

cetainly an interesting question
on my etrac i use a pattern similar to the ones you can find anywhere on the net ..ie very little disc mostly in the bottom righthand corner and 2 lines running across the bottom
Dave in your middle photo you are using a lot of disc ...are you losing any depth ?
or is this another urban myth that the more disc the less depth ?
i ask this because when looking in the preset programmes some of the patterns have most of the screen blanked out !!
i'm trying to think of anything that i have found at 18 .00 line or below and to be honest i can't remember finding any romans or anything good that low on the screen
lead can be anywhere from 18 up to 9
and most of the hammereds are 13 to 11 but mostly 12 . something
so we could be listening to a lot of signals we don't realy need to !!!! ....ear fatigue for nothing

thanks for bumping mrix.
thanks for the reply's guys
I always run an open screen on 2 tone ferrous as I like to listen to the iffy signals right next to iron and worried that if I use any descrim then those signals won't come through if the machine hasn't time to recover from descriming the iron. if that makes sense lol.
I have tried a little descrim on 2 tone ferrous and dug the high and low tones (the descrim blanks out the big iron) and the only thing I found that gave a high (good tone) and low tone together were them flat corroded 4 hole buttons and really corroded non ferrous scrap.
so the only thing I've found under the 2 tone ferrous line that gives a low scrap tone is really corroded stuff.
I think I need to give 2 tone ferrous with a tadpole descrim a few weeks trial and see if anything interesting pop's up under the ferrous line as a low tone.

That middle one is for one club site we go to that is littered with iron, I took the choice not to dig every foot or so :))

On the CTX you have two discrimination patterns per mode, and I have either open screen or the minimal pattern shown as an alternative to use.

I would like to run near open screen but my body (back) won't do all the digging =)) , so a trade off I am afraid, wish I had got in to detecting years ago ;)

I do worry about loss of depth though, as I agree I haven't found anything good at depth apart from Large lumps of lead or Iron, so there could be some truth in the too much discrimination losing depth ? But it will have to be a trade off I have to live with.

Dave
i do know where you are coming from with the bad back
on my best fields i will be more selective in what i dig ...but on club digs i will dig just about anything that i think isn't iron
i think we are all slightly paranoid about missing anything and so tend to use the machine with very little disc ....but do we really need to ?
our American friends seem to use a lot of selective disc in their detecting and when you read their forums they seem to have the depth ? and they seem to hunt in really iron infested sites ie old houses
there are a lot of CTX and etrac users on here it would be interesting to hear from them if they have found romans near the bottom of their screens ?
