I just posted about trading in my Explorer on another thread, fantastic machine great design and I spent a long time deciding what to upgrade too, but! just was not happy using it when I got it, got tips off the forum on best programs tried them out at various digs but all the time I was using it I was thinking I don't like this, as said in other thread in hind site I should have gone from the Ace 250 up to a safari then perhaps to Explorer, and because i started to dislike using it, it put me off detecting so went for an Garrett AT Pro international which I really enjoy using.
I may return to the Minelab club at some point when I have got more detecting time under my belt and when I can afford ctx 3030 so I expect I will be using my Garrett for a long time to come.

I hope chef won't be uspset if I post this up, but I too had my interest piqued by his post above, so much so that I went on a hunt for it, this is what I found, gonna give it a try on my next hunt to see if it suits my ears

No secret in my settings and I basically only use one set up;
Disc out nails
DETECTOR MODE. Advanced
SENSITIVITY. Manual and as high as you and it are comfortable with try not to drop below 19
DISPLAY Smart
SELECT.reject nails only
VOLUME 10 max
GAIN. 9
TONE THRESHOLD 1
VARIABILITY 9
LIMITS 9
SOUNDS Conductive
RESPONSE Audio 3
RECOVERY DEEP on FAST off But if you get an SEF coil both off
If things get too noisy then back off either/both Sensitivity and audio gain.
And then it's a matter of practice, practice, practice, I't can and does take a good six months to learn the tones as these are the most reliable (it took me a year) so don't get disheartened if you think you'll never get the hang of it, it's a little like learning to ride a bike, at first you may think you'll never get the hang of it then one day "Bingo" and you'll wonder why you couldn't before.

or some very minor variation

i run open screen , nothing rejected , then use the edit screen and disc the top left pixel out ( this stops you from going insane ) , the rest of program is same. to make the learning curve easy you only need to learn one sound !! iron!!.... you dig the rest

I have had mine for about 6 months now. Quite similar settings to that 'one programme' actually but will do this one exactly at the weekend. I do feel im getting used to the tomes as sometimes i dig the really crap signals and am not surprised to find lumps of iron and other rubbish, i prefer the numbers screen though to the cross hairs.
Hi tone two way is a digger and high tone scratchy one ways are also....

Ok so i went out today and loaded those settings exactly..... to be honest i was confused as normally I was getting high tones for good target and low for iron and junk but today some trash was coming up very high on the tones. I was trusting the smart screen and the numbers but am I doing this correctly. I kind of preferred the old settings I had but I will give this a go when i go out a few more times and see.

Stop keep fiddling.
Start in factory settings (do a reset).
If there aren`t any finds there no machine will find them.
Once you start to learn the tones in factory settings then start making GENTLE adjustments.
Do not use any discrimination, use your ears.
Once you learn what is iron........ dig the rest.
Numbers are the machines "next best guess" and are pretty much no use.

Opinions expressed on MY posts are mine and NOT those of any democratic organisation I volunteer for.

Have had my explorer se for 10 years now and have found some nice things.artifacts, hammered coins ,silvercoins etc.tried factory settings and my own but don't really rate the machine. Its too heavy and can miss a lot.Just got the new Deus v4and tried it on some pasture id done many times with the explorer.within 5 mins I had pulled 4 coins up.only did half hour and found lead soldiers, bag seals and a roman copper childs ring.all had been missed by the explorer se and in factory settings as well.am gonna stick with the deus and will be selling the explorer.

I had one as a first detector, kept for about a year then upgraded to a CTX, it is a great machine but the factory programs discrimination wise are not meant for UK soil and coins. it's only downfall is a slow recovery speed, so swing speed is very important. I had some great finds with it and like all minelabs depth and beach detecting is very good.
