hi all ,I m thinking of trying the beach along the front of Swansea bay towards the mumbles end and in front of the uni, any good advice? cheers Russ from Newport.

If I had a bit of time would of asked if you wanted company and share fuel costs Unfortunately busy again Good luck I am sure the beach experts will give a few tips on areas to search and state of tide that is best. I saw a gold roman found on beach at Tenby amongst an rocky outcrop..... Lucky so and so!

Hope that you can help ...
I am in the Cardiff area and new to this... just checking out the crown estate territory ... places such as Swansea and Penarth beaches don't seem to be under Crown estate control... who would i need to see to obtain permission?

hi oldartefact you can download a crown estate permit off the net free of charge,if you go to a beach that doesnt require one you should be ok, most councils are pretty good as long as you dont mess it up leaving unfilled holes, or go when people are swimming etc.Private beaches need to be researched a bit more.Obviously, check signs or notice boards at the top of the beach the,yre usually a good guide as to what you can and cant do.If you,re from Cardiff and new to the hobby have some practise sessions down the foreshore, prob plenty of old coins kicking about out there I m from Newport ,and have found lots of coins in the mud and sand at the local seawalls people would chuck them in for luck years ago and would paddle or swim in anything,.good luck mate.

Thanks for the info but am assuming that because i have never seen anyone metal detecting at Penarth (let me have a go first please!!) and its not on the Crown Estate maps that it must be out of bounds... Just how many councils have banned metal detecting? there are no beach signs, nothing on the council web site... just how are we meant to figure all this out? Of course I could contact the council, have the wife lined up to do this next week , but its all very ad-hoc if you ask me.

Another thing... suppose that I find a beach not on the Crown estate map, that is being metal detected... can I just join in on the assumption that its okay, or do i need to contact the council personally to find out?

Am also going to post a thread regarding the mean low and high tide water marks, that denote where you can and cannot detect on crown estate beaches, without some surveyor drawing appropriate lines in the sand on a daily basis, just how am i expected to know where these are?

Is this just me being thick or what?? Anyone and everyone feel free to answer that one!!!

Hey mate I was down Penarth in 3rd Jan ,found a silver spoon an couple of odds and ends, but only had an hour.One tip if you go there take a fork to dig ,its rough ground to dig a bit tough for a spade.
