Goes to show that they are researched and matched to the owner by the Police when they can. It's good to do good! (and you often get a reward for the safe return anyway! and in some cases for me (an like MRIX said) if it's sentimental then value has no meaning and the reward is often higher than the gold weight value. ::g
Was it the police who told you the owner had been found or did the owner corroborate the police information aswell?

My brother was in the police for many years. He told me not to bother 'We've got enough to do'.

That maybe the case but it does not stop us doing the right thing and at least trying to reunite the owner with what is rightfully theirs ::g

Thanks for the replys people, i see a certain ammount of common sense is the safest bet here,

I thought Metal detecting as a hobby was exciting it is dont get me wrong.
BUT
When I got permissions recently and done some research I was like a kid at xmas i have not been so excited in ages, I could not sleep, that is priceless.
I imagine that returning a ring to its rightfull owner would give a very similar buzz and that is my intention.

As a goal for my metal detecting I mostly care about age, the value of things comes second, but i would like to at some point say the metal detector has payed for its self.

Thanks

I wouid be interested to know if you were provided with evidence that they had been returned... also out of the 160+ rings returned how many owners contacted you to say thanks. I think that you must always be sceptical of anything that is not backed up by hard fact and evidence, after all the police are!!!! rl; rl; rl; rl;

Come to think of it ... how do the so called "owners" prove that the rings are theirs ... silly question ... but assume that there is a cast iron or is iot cast gold answer to this!!!

Myself and a couple local diggers do recover and return rings for people, but to be honest these days we return and are asked to find far more Mobile phones than rings. Even on Bridlington beach there were several I phones and Blackberrys found and returned last year. These days the public seem more attached to there phones than anything else ::g

Mrs found a silver chain and as it was 70gram we took it to the police station who kept it for 30 days, we had to go back to see if it was still there (which it was) within 14 days of the end of the 30 days if you get my meaning. As the law currently goes the person who lost it still has a claim to it provided they can prove its theirs. The 30 day period does away with the criminality aspects of theft by finding.

the police are not really interested in small change,what they represent as small change when I asked after finding a wallet with 30 quid and cards in it a few years ago, they said that anything £10 or less isnt worth the paperwork and there is no way to prove who it belonged to unless they knew the vague area they lost it, or they write the serial numbers down, but he said there could have been someone behind you that heard you say you were going to hand it in to the police, they then trot up there the next day and say they lost £20 next to the zebra crossing beside tesco's, hey presto they scored your twenty quid. Whereas other items are descriptive, unless there was writing on the note, thenthey would probably do you for defacing it lol

the wife walked in with an iphone 4 a few days ago, she just come back from a couple of hours out with the carer, what annoyed me is the carer said to carol keep it, now bearing in mind carol had brain damage and is easily led, I basically put it plain and simple, ok, you have lost three phones, how annoyed were you, very annoyed and peed off she said, well if someone handed your phone in how would you feel, happy she said, well there you go, make someone happy, and in the process you feel good about yourself handing it in, just as I was saying that the iphone rang, she used her sons phone to ring here own phone and was crying her eyes out because she lost it, when I put the phone to carols ear she started to bluddy cry aswell ;f , but she was over the moon when she picked it up and gave carol a reward, even though she kept saying she didnt want it, but it made the person that lost it feel better, as a phone isnt just a phone anymore, to cap it all she was married to someone I used to play footy with just down the street, justin robson, the brother of Brian robson, x england manager for those who dont follow footy, as his mother still lives down the street from me
