This was found where i lived when i was a kid, we was evacuated out of our homes for over 3-4 days while it was disposed of.
Just getting into metal detecting this last month, i dug this story up out of interest, not sure how it was found, but a metal detector would detect this, and if you were to dig, hit it and bang!
Scary to think these things unexploded this size can go so long just sat there.

Last summer I saw some chaps using one of these Geo physics thingys they use on Time Team. As the were on land that I have permission on I asked if they had any interesting readings thats when they told me they were looking for UXB prior to a pipeline being laid. rl; rl;
This issue popped up in a work related Journal a few years back and a company apparently have the problem areas mapped for the uk. I think they offer to provide copies of local maps? Not sure if its just a leader to tempt business their way
Most air dropped bombs are at about 15m now apparently so I think its unlikely we detectorists would ever find one?

Veni Vidi Detecti!
Hi Dean
There are plenty still around I'm afraid. I know the locations of a number of unexploded bombs in the area as, because they buried themselves so deep, they were just left where they landed. Some are as deep as 20 feet.
I wouldn't be too concerned about things this size. What you need to be more careful of is the little stuff that you will find that can easily still remove a chunk of your body. The golden rule is, if you cannot be 100% certain that what you are digging up is 'safe', leave it alone and call the authorities. Only the other day, someone posted a picture in another forum of what they thought was a mine. Their exact words were 'I am fairly certain this is a mine. I found it on a beach.....'
Now, it turned out to be a metal fishing net float but this is a prime example of what NOT to do. He was sure it was a mine so TOOK IT HOME !!!! Incredibly stupid. I was lost for words. I mean, what did he think he was going to do with it if it was a mine? Us it as a doorstop? Hang it off his living room wall? Stick it on the hearth? Complete and utter dumb-bell.
You will undoubtedly find old ordnance at some point. If it looks like a mortar/grenade, chances are it probably is. Anything heavy and cylindrical leave alone. If you find live ammo, you must hand it in to the police. Finally, if you do find something like a grenade, please deal with it yourself. Don't re-bury it !!!! A few months back a club dig took place somewhere in England, can't remember where, and someone found a British grenade. After having a chat about it amongst those present, they decided the best course of action was to chuck it into a hedge at the side of a field. Perhaps they thought it would be a hassle ringing the police? Maybe they didn't want their dig halted? Whatever the reason, their actions were deplorable as, what if some kid finds it and decides to pull the pin? It beggars belief ........
Anyway, I shall stop soap boxing !!!
Find something you're not sure of, take a picture and get it ID'd here before you remove it from the ground.
Cheers

PS I can't recall any MDer being killed or injured by old ordnance UNLESS they fiddled around with it so just stay safe, and don't assume that because it has been in the ground 70+ years it is safe !!
