Coil sizes?

Hi,

I'll start as many threads do here at Metal detecting beach or water......... Never been metal detecting on beach and so have spent last cpl weeks reading threads and getting Crown permit.

One thing I am not certain of is best coil size to use?

I will use beach programme on Etrac and would like to use SEF 18x16 coil for max ground coverage. Do larger coils become unstable on wet sand or are they ok?

Really not sure what coil I should opt for. Stock, Ultimate 13, SEF 18x 16 or SEF 8x6.

Looking forward to taking the boy camping if weather warms up and trying my hand on the beaches.

One more thing do you use sand scoops? They look a lot easier than bending over using a digger.

I've used 13" Ultimate, 12x10 SEF and 8x6 SEF with no problems at all, on wet or dry sand, shingle and black mud. Smaller coil is useful to get into rock crevices.
Sand scoop makes it all easier. Mine is a plastic feed scoop - just wave it over the coil and if the target is in the scoop you will hear it.

i prefer a large coil while on the beach for the simple fact that you have a large area and limited opportunity before being chased off by the incoming tide, you shouldnt have any problems with whatever size coil you use.
