Help again :(

Post by madbean »

So today i went metal detecting for the first time..probably choose the worst place.... the beach in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, which was...you can call it moist... the detector went mental...even when i lowered the sensitivity, it would beep one sec and the next like it never happened...the same when i would rest the detector (coil-face down) and lift it up again... i did manage to find one nail, two screws and a spring (in two hours) but it really worried me that it would be for no reason at all...especially when i would rest my hand and lift the detector again....not to mention that i must have dug at least 5-6 'ghost holes'

...any thoughts? I hope its not the detectors fault (garrett ace 250)

best regards,
Maria

Hi Glen :)

a) you are fast ;)

b) I do remember you saying that actually.... to be honest when my house mate (yes, im blaming him) took me there i thought it was going to be dry sand....not only it was ..not dry, but it was filled with little rocks under the sand....

But as long as i know that it was a normal reaction and there is nothing wrong with little Garrett Im good :)

I think the sand in whitby is dry....:)

best regards, and a hug for replying so fast...

Maria

hi.
correct me if i am wrong but the problem some detectors have on wet sand is the salt content of the water. not the mineral content of the sand itself
the ace range is well known not to like wet sand, as are several other detectors.

Hi Maria,Don't get disheartend there is plent of dry sand top of beach, and as you learn to use your MD
you will, gain more knowledge about reading the beach n were to look.
There are many people that have the same MD as you n have made some great finds on the beaches.
You donot have to spend silly money on a £1.000 to £2000 m/c to get results. The C Scope
C4PI.costs just £250,or £268,with coil cover ,earphones.etc.and will more than do the job for you.
Stick to your m/c, learn to walk before you try to run! and I'm sure it will all come togther.BEST of LUCK.mike
PS.when youve got clay or rocks under the sand, the goodies cant sink any lower.as for ghost holes sometimes you dig a signal and as you dig the sand out your target goes deeper.sometimes it could be a small piece of wire.piece of lead shot/fishing weight.
Big shovel n dig quick.
