Detecting in Devon

Post by Brendan McEvoy »

Hi all,
Going to Devon in the next few days and looking at the Crown web site it appears that the area I will be in (Bude)is not covered by the foreshore permit. Do I need need permission and if so how do I go about getting it?

Hi Brendan, Bude is on the North Coast of Cornwall and don't come under the Crown Foreshore. All Cornish beaches come under the Duchy of Cornwall. They have their own rules. Its a minefield to find out the facts as some of these Duchy beaches are owned by Cornish Council, National Trust or are privately owned. There was talk of introducing a £60 a year fee to detect Duchy beaches, not sure how far that has progressed.
I once asked on here "Can I detect on Cornish beaches", and ended up with my head spinning.
Many will say just take your detector and enjoy detecting on the beaches in Cornwall, detect away from the crowds, fill in holes and you should be ok. But if you want the true facts, as I said, its a minefield and best way is to contact someone in authority at your planned beach.
Good luck ::g.

Thanks Janner. I will try to do it properly but if I can't get a definitive answer I may just wing it. It would be such a shame to go all that way and not do something. There must be someone on this forum who regularly detects in this area. Thanks again. Mac ::g

Your welcome Brendan, I see there is another thread running about detecting Cornish beaches. So will be handy to keep an eye on both for info.

worth searching the forum for Bude, someone on here a little while back said they were told by the beach warden that the main beach was ssi and out of bounds for detecting. There was some suggestion that other parts were ok.

just stay of summerlize beach all the rest fair game.
Crooklets, Widemouth ,Sandy mouth
It was me that was asked nicely to leave by the beach warden after a chat
but he said all the other beaches ok.
Lots of stones can be hard digging but worth it.
When you about could show you some spots if not busy :D
