Bomb timing device shrapnel
As a relative newbie I was interested to find some scraps of metal that I initially suspected might be shrapnel. After finding a couple of further pieces with markings similar to that on the index rings of lathes, I thought I'd got it wrong and that they were in fact parts from a broken lathe.
On further investigation, and a bit of Googling, I found this picture that seems to confirm my finds as WW2 shrapnel.

The finds were in an area that had several anti aircraft batteries and was likely to have been a target.

I hate finding this stuff. Our beach is littered with it and you soon get sick of it although good targets to practice with when your starting out. The bullets are worse, they blow your ears off lol

Thanks guys. I must admit to being one of the people who likes to find this stuff! The farmer whose land I am detecting on is really chuffed too as his kids are taking the finds to school.
In the centre of your picture you have what appears to be the top filler plug from a no. 36m grenade. You can see it in Dave's picture.
If you're finding grenade bits, you could well also find a complete grenade. If you do, please don't be tempted to move it from the ground. Unexploded no. 36m grenades are notoriously bad tempered and one little movement could set them off. You will then have 3seconds to get to a safe distance........100 yards for a 36m.

As in the picture you posted.....I also get loads of this stuff on the fields that I go on pretty much exactly as the picture. It's amazing how much of this stuff is about.
There were military posted on many farms throughout the 2nd world war and spending lots of amunition practicing.
Where I go, there were Akak guns positioned on high ground so theres lots of copper/brass munitions leftovers.
Two aircraft crashed on my permission during the war. One was an American hurricane of which the engine still remains burried. Apparently someone is going to recover it.
I guess that, if a plane crashed during the war, the engine was such a heavy lump that it was easier to bury it than move it.

As a general rule I don't grumble when it surfaces, infact if a nose cone with the timing ring intact comes up it pleases the farmers to see and have a hands on.
When I was a young chap during WW II after the all clear warning was sounded we emerged from the air raid shelters to see the damage.
That was the time to collect the various types of shrapnel very often still warm.
Jerry.
