Define 'Clad'

Post by hydraglide »

We seem to have adopted the American term 'clad' for some of our coins found on the beach,(and other places,no doubt) so I'm taking it 'our' clad coins are the new(ish) iron cored 1p 2p and I think some 10p (and possibly 5s too.)

Absolutely right, plenty of countries do this now, even Canada one of the worlds largest producer of nickel has now opted for nickel plated steel in their coins from 5 cents to 50 cents. They won`t last long either in sand or soil.

We don't have any clad coinage in the U.K. The latest 1p,2p,5p,10p coins are electroplated. The US detectorists seem to use the 'clad' word as a general catch-all term for "low-worth modern rubbish coins". It's probably this use of it that is being implied when it's used to describe U.K coins.
Here's the details of the clad coin-making process (10 cent/25 cent/50 cent):

Hi all,

With regards to 'clad', we may need a new term. Slightly unrelated news item, but you'll get the link to this topic:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22956874" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Once these coins are in the mix, they will technically be 'clad' in nickel.

As I'm new to the hobby, can anyone tell me what if any effect these new coins will have? Will they be easier/harder to detect? Ignored due to discrimination etc?

Thanks in advance

Pat

Mr. Babbage:
Quote:"With regards to 'clad', we may need a new term."
The term is for our steel-cored coins is "plated" or "electro-plated"

Quote:"Once these (5p/10p) coins are in the mix..."
They have been in circulation well over 12 months, keep up.

Quote:"can anyone tell me what if any effect these new coins will have? Will they be easier/harder to detect? Ignored due to discrimination etc?"
Here's some of the many threads you could have found:

So after reading the above threads,as well as this one, seems very soon detectors like the Sovereign will soon only be good on the beach for finding gold (I should be so lucky) with our 'silver' coins now appearing to be 'clad' ( I hate that term) seems eventually the Sov is going to null most coins out, particulerly when getting a bit corroded. So will a meter on the Sov become a neccessity ?

It's likely to be some time before 20p's and 50p's become plated steel, and you can still find 1 and 2 pound coins, the only reason they may change them is because of forgeries, or to shrink them down in weight/size.
