Upgrading coils on the Etrac..

Post by clint »

Hello all,
seems like the most popular choice of coil upgrade for general use for the ET is the Detech 13" ultimate..What would anyone recommend as an upgrade for deep searching permanent pasture?

If its for pasture i would have said something like the SEF15x12 Coil,i use one on my T2 but only on pasture it certainly gives you much more depth over the stock coil and also the Detech 13" ultimate coil as well.

If i want to go deeper with a VLF machine with discrimination then i use the Detech 18inch coil and run it in 3Khz mode on the DFX,but my personal opinion the SEF coil would do for all your requirements and is not over heavy weight wise.

id say go for the Ultimate, its a very good all round coil, good deapth, good ground coverage and an absolute beast on the beach and not as heavy as some of the larger sef coils ::g
lots of MD related stuff ;))

Hi Clint, have to say I enjoy using the Ultimate most on my E these days for pasture and beach.

The depth is a bit better than the stock coil but the separation is far better and it picks up and identifies ferrous & non ferrous targets close together allowing better ID of the good targets.
It also covers more ground and is lighter than the stock coil which cuts down on fatique on long hunts.

Check out the video comparisons by Tombs on the Minelab owners forum, he gives a great account of most of the replacement coils for the E on his testbed.

Best of luck with your choice
Ger.

Thanks for the reply K!Looking through the forum it seems like the 8x6 SEF is popular on the ET..one to think about. What about the other end of the scale?Thinking of changing the stock coil for the ultimate 13 for general use, getting the 8x6 SEF for stubble and trash both of which are/can be on the land I visit. Now what`s the choice for going larger again?Would the 15" SEF be a pointless upgrade against the 13" ultimate or should I go to the 17?Yes..got a bungee!

...any info. regarding whether the 18 SEF would be a worthwhile investment for permanent pasture alongside the 13 ultimate for general use or is there not much in it??

The big 18x15SEF in theory is a deep coil but the weight of them is just amazing,of course you did mention about using a harness but its worth thinking about prior to buy one.

It may well be worth looking at the Tont Hunt hoard thread, albeit he is using the Explorer11 rather than the Etrac but he is using the SEF15x12 option and that is on pasture so prehaps that would be the best combination.

Thanks for the replies.Interesting point regarding shallower finds..I`m in the process of deciding on some extras for the ET.Small coil for stubble,13 ultimate as a general, all round coil, these I`m decided on,plus a deep seeking coil for permanent pasture.

thanks
