Why...
Do what appear to be otherwise intelligent people (some not all) ask you like I've been asked this morning,"what is that ?' Or 'what are you looking for ?' Or 'do you find anything with that ?' I felt like saying today, "no I come here every day and find sod all,but it's fun" but wait that's almost, not quite the truth...
I dread it when I see someone 'heading my way' normally I'm quite amicable, and my other half laughs as I often go and talk to complete strangers (as these people are doing I suppose) and I have no problem going to talk or be approached by other detectorist (though some of these are a tad strange) it's just members of the public asking daft questions...

I agree sometimes it can be a bit annoying, especially if you have head phones on and have to take them off to hear what they are saying.
However I usually find that the majority are really interested in what you are doing and I think by just spending a few minutes talking to them, must help heighten our profile. It certainly makes their day. You never know they might just take up the hobby one day.

Last week I was interrupted 3 times whilst out hunting. The first was a gypsy woman who wanted to make sure I was filling my holes in as she claimed one of her foals broke a leg because of a hole. I took her to see holes I had dug earlier and she could not see where I'd dug until I pointed them out, so that put her mind at rest. She then went on to tell me how her husband goes detecting at night, so deduce from that what you will. Next a lady and her 3 grandchildren gathered round and I gave them a little demonstration re how the detector worked. Finally an old woman approached me and asked whether I worked for the local council and was I 'testing the soil' to see if the land was suitable for building on. When I told her I was detecting she asked whether I could find a platinum and diamond ring she'd lost. I said I could try but then she told me it was lost 20 years ago in a house she no longer lives in and she thought her husband might of hidden the ring when stoned on pot and then forgotten where he'd put it. She went on and on and on........................but one has to be polite.
Where are you detecting though, as where i go i don't see a soul your obviously in a public area there , i only ever get bothered when i go the beach.

My 2 council permissions are 2 areas of common land, so people walking their dogs etc are a regular thing. How I'd love the relative privacy of a farm permission.Sportsman wrote:Where are you detecting though, as where i go i don't see a soul your obviously in a public area there , i only ever get bothered when i go the beach.

As I do the beach I get a fair bit of people, most are genuinely interested and easy to spot the idiots/,a chat takes 5mins and can,t but help our image.most I had at one time was seven japanese tourists who all had cameras etc [famous at last] but was a good laugh.

I get them all the time on my beaches, I must have a very approachable appearance
but I do not usually mind.
The best I have had was two gorgeous young Italian women who were very interested in what I was finding, it was a bit hard to concentrate on detecting after that encounter
