I'm amazed at how badly that Viking 40 tested because I have a Viking 20, which is a more basic model, and it's way better than that performance. I've had minim-sized fragments out on many occasions.

What Norfolk Wolf describes as a 'normal speed' sweep is much faster than I go though, so maybe my methods have come down the speed of the machine!

I've also used the Viking 20 on wet sand and it's been fine. I've had a brass cupboard handle up from a good 8 inches in wet sand and plenty of coins in the 3-4 inch range.

I've used it on a Crown Foreshore river bed too and had a little buckle up from 4-5 inches in wet mud and things like a musket ball, coins and loads of TINY fragments from smaller depths.

I'm sure people on here will have other suggestions for detectors in that price range. But if you are set on a Viking, I've had no problems with my VK20.

A long time ago and not knowing whether the hobby would be for me, I purchased a relatively second-hand machine ... a Viking VK30. I found lots with it and it was hooked. I sold it on after about 10 months, but it had served it's purpose.

Viking is the oldest British manufacturer and deserve a place in the market.

V6 is fine on wet sand but as said before not much depth approx 6ins on coins but a lot depends on how you adjust it, use headphones and null out tone until just audible with no rejection and you will hear subtle change of tone I have found loads of modern coins in wet sand all useless and rusted but it does find.Approx£100 for a new machine as a starter so don't knock them they do find within reasonable depth.
