WARNING - Deus charger cable potential fire hazard

Post by Verulamium »

Hi Gang,

I thought I'd better let you other Deus users of a potential hazard I've come across with my charger. I set my large coil to charge last night ready for some detecting today. I knew it was nearly flat so was expecting a couple of hours to charge. Plugged it in in the dinng room and turned off the light. I walked past about 15 mins later and saw that the coil light was flashing like it was no longer charging/attached to power so walked in and smelled a burning plastic smell!! On closer inspection it looks like the part of the charging loom where the 3 cables split has suffered from a broken wire and shorted out leading to a melted plastic sheath. I know it's only 5 volts or so and unlikely to start a fire but fires have been started by smaller sources of ignition.

The cable has always been well looked after and only comes out of the draw when charging is required then returned so it hasn't exactly had a hard life!

Thankfully I had a spare USB cable I could use from a portable hard drive to get charged as the original is knackered and no longer works. I found sod all on my afternoon search anyway!

I've attached a quick picture below that shows the damage and location of the fault.

Be safe and good searching!!
Cheers, V ::g

hi, i had roughly the same problem, noticed two out of the three leads were not charging, on closer inspection i noticed two of the wires were frayed in the same place as your picture shows. luckily i spotted it early. cheers dave.

The Deus manual on page 35 warns about leaving batteries on charge unnecessarily after a full 3 hour charge.

Its not a good idea to leave them on charge all day or night. ;) Jerry.
