I think digging coke is just one of those things you have to accept when using a sensitive machine. I dig a fair bit but those low iffy signals sometimes turn out to be cut halves and quarters. The coke is always within a few inches of the surface so no bother.

With regards to descrim and depth I always operate as lower discrim as my ears permit. On my land that's between 3 and 5.5. At the lower end I do dig some deep iron but that's part of the game. The difference the discrim makes is whether that deep hammy (or other low conductivity item) makes an iron sound or a dig me sound. I'm sure it makes little difference to high conductivity targets like pre dec pennies, etc.

Just remember if 49 in every 50 'coke' signals is coke and the other one a hammy that's not too badder odds!!

Good luck, V ::g

Just had a read thru replies. Im off to farm now & I think I'm going to just dig the coke for the now as well & see if I can seperate the tone a bit & also brush ground suface with boot. I found that while the coke does give sweet pitch tone it can be a bit ghostly so I'll see if I can start recognising the signs.
Really want the control box now.
Cheers.

Thanks so much for this post!!! Although I use an Ace 250 I pick a lot of this up and wondered what the hell it was!! Yes... a sweet signal one way but bad at 360 degrees around it... Once again thanks for the lesson!! ::g

Managed another hammered & a Roman or Celtic coin in a fairly bad state. Will pop them on later on the chance of an ID. 4 outings now with machine & 2 hammered and a grot, really pleased with the Deus. That said, good fields are key as well, which luckily I have.

Setting 3. Not too keen on relic, the field tends to go a bit quiet on setting 6.

Main thing when using any detector is to check at 90% always has been & always will be.
It will sort out the good from the bad most times.
If I was to give advice to new to the hobby that would be it.
