Wow! What a nice find, well done. No doubt the experts on here will be able to identify the coin/medallion/artefact for you but can you let us know about the actual finding of the item, machine, how deep, any other items from the same field? Finding this must boost your enthusiasm and get you racing about more often! Liam

Hi thanks for the reply, I use a Garrett Ace 150 and it was about 6 inches down, I found another few rusty bits and bobs which I can always put on at a later date after I have cleaned them up, it was a bit random really in the middle of a field in the middle of knowhere, Must have dropped out of someones pocket, but must have made a right thud at the time!

Hi mcgold 8363

Nice find! Pope Pius IX - obviously a Catholic connection. Now, the game begins - a token, a gift, a seal perhaps? More likely a commemorative piece if the text is anything to go by. Worthwhile finding out if the Pope visited the country or, was celebrated for anything important/useful. Was there a place of worship in the area of the find?

What size is the piece?

Ultimately, if in doubt, contact your local PAS (the area one can be found online - they have a half decent website as well which I use to compare/identify my finds with previously reported finds by other people).

Good luck!

Hi there...nice find !

Pius 1V was pope between 1846 to 1878 & so was a contemporary of Queen Victoria . He never visited the UK ; although he was very conservative he is acknowledged to be the first modern pope .

Catholiscism in England was gaining much popularity at the time , & the medal that you've found would have been an important display of faith for someone .

Nice find......Would definately go back to that spot and search some more......seems an odd coin/token to be a singular loss, possibly some sort of gathering there or religous event....

This is the bit i like piecing together the jig saw....

As for worth, its worth what someone is willing to pay for it.....although i would probaly be keeping that one until more info came out.......

Good luck

I have the garrett ace 150, how wide a hole did you dig for this then???

I think the ace 150 does an excellent job for the money you pay but I think the ace 250 with the pinpointer is a must.

I dug a hole 1/2 foot wide and found nothing in it although I new something was there. it turned out to be a £1 coin about 1/2 inch away from where i had dug my hole.

Going to practice with this a few more weeks then sell it on ebay and then buy the 250.

I dont have a clue what you have found by the way, but I will swap it for the £1 i found if you want??

I did however find (I THINK) a meteorite, it is a small rock and is showing as iron on 150 and was about 4" down, I will post a picture.

Hi,
White metal medallion celebration Pope Pius IX. Reverse: elaborate shield and lengthy inscription relating to this Pope's inauguration in 1846.

Looks like yours was in a Pendant of some sort hence the damage on the edges.
Cheers
