I have had a couple "conversations" with a members of the public about detecting, not much of a contest really
in my day job I work in a front line role and normally dealing with Mr or Mrs very angry most days, so water off a ducks back to me, I can appreciate it can be upsetting at the time, but put in perspective it is not a common occurrence and in the main people are just curious

Mind you I have used the line once " I'm so sorry, I think you have made a mistake you obviously think you are talking to someone who cares " that went down well :)) :))

I normally tell them that I am in fact complying with the law and that
( if they are ranting and being abusive ) they are in danger of falling foul of the law, the main thing is to keep calm and don't get abusive as that is the road to ruin offer to call your local Bobbie if they are that sure of themselves as you are the one being verbally assaulted whilst pursuing a lawful activity
that normally works ;)

Cheers

I had an old lady yesterday as a matter of fact come over and tap me on the shoulder making me jump out of my skin. She had a face of thunder so I took my headphones off and thought here we go.She then said is that a garrett to which I replied yes, she then went on to tell me it was her favorite hobby and she had been doing it for years. She then went on to tell me she was 86 years old x; and planned to carry on as long as she could walk.Oh and a face like thunder i am afraid she looks like this so looks can be deceiving.A lovely old lady which kept me chatting for nearly an hour Ha ha

Aint had any nasty people approach me whilst I have been detecting. Had one or two strange ones though! The other month, whilst the good weather was at it's peak, I was detecting on the sands at Talacre when a guy approached me for a chat; wanted to know if I had any luck yet.

He was as naked as the day he was born! :"> Really put me off my swing for a while. 8-|

Never seen him before, or since. Any way; I don't think I would recognise his face! :D

While on West Bay beach, some lads/lasses who were merry with cans of cider in hands were walking towards me and started taking the mick. The ringleader was keen to show off to his gang and stood in my path and shouted "YOU FOUND ANYTHING YET?" I reached in to my junk pouch and handed him a mangled empty cider can. "yes, you dropped this and it needs to go in the bin" I quickly added "I also found cheaper car insurance but I'm keeping that" (ads were on TV at the time) thankfully he did not take offence (his mates were cracking up) and they did't bother me anymore.

Love these stories .. When I first started md'ing I was chatting in a field with the owner when a guy with a dog comes over and starts having a go at us for detecting (obviously unaware we only had one detector and the fella I'm with is the landowner) .. He must have gone on for 20 seconds about thieving and trespass and damage .. The owner says to him when he finished "sorry but are you the police or something" .. The guy gets even madder and then he flew off the handle saying "don't go anywhere I'm calling the police" ... The owner says "fine call the police" and walks off about 20 metres to make his own phone call ... 10 minutes later and the guy is in the back of the police car being arrested for trespass .. Turns out the owners son is a local constable and sent someone immediately!!

I can't imagine what he felt like when he found he was gobbing off at the owner and being arrested for trespass .. priceless!!

They let him go after about 15 minutes of "questioning" him in the car lol

That's brilliant Jaimie ::g
I've only been "challenged" once, by an elderly woman who threatened to tell the land owner and pointed out that the cows would soon be in the field. After explaining i had permission from the land owner and offering the contact phone number, she went into full reverse and asked "have you found anything?". I showed her a 1907 penny and a little lead battle ship and she was totally engrossed!
She then went on to tell me the history of the area and where might be best to look for interesting things :-O
I think she was just doing her bit for neighbourhood watch :)

As far as I know Trespass is a civil matter and you cannot be arrested for it... They could only arrest for breach of the peace or if you commit an offence.
