Beach after a storm.

Post by janner53 »

I have read that a beach is great to detect on after a storm where it washes tons of sand off the beach letting them deeper targets to be found but what about the opposite, when the storm washes up tons of sand. can this also be a good time to detect.
I visited a tiny local beach yesterday and couldn't believe how much had been washed up, where once I had to step up on a rock I found the sand level with it. I thought to myself that any finds would be well buried, so left the beach and went inland, but thinking about it, can a storm wash up onto the beach just as many finds.
I ask because I read someone here say they have just had a storm and can't wait to get on the beach to see what the storm has washed IN.

Oh, and being a newbie to metal detecting I'd like to pass on my first tip here. When passing a handful of soil over the coil to see if you have a find in your hand, make sure your watch is on the other hand. I found this after a couple of hours wondering why my detector was beeping as i passed a handful of soil over the coil but was nothing there.
=)) ,,,, I'm getting there ::g

When large amounts of sand have been deposited on the beaches I've done, mostly all I've found were aluminium things. Plenty of crap too, usually plastic trash. So yeah, you can find things, but they will be made of lighter metals. You will also get very recent drops ofc. Not a good time to detect imho but if you don't have a choice of the time/date when you will go out for your detecting session, then you'll just have to put up with it and enjoy it just the same. :)

If you're going out after a storm, it needs to be before the next tide, things just get covered over again very fast.

You will find at this time of the year that loads of sand will get laid on the beaches and the finds will be low.But if you search on the top of the beach where people have been given good weather then you should find the new droppings with luck.In the winter the sand tends to be ripped away from beaches and this is the time to get out after a good blow but again it can be piled up so you need to be local to keep a eye on the beach conditions or just lucky and hit it right :D

The beach I go to has changed so much the sand is at least 12 ft higher than it was a few years ago, let's hope for some big winter storms.

I had an hour this morning on my local beach. Loads of mackerel spinners which will come in handy but no goodies as such.

ooooh, here's an old thread of mine raised from the past. I remember doing this post way when i first started metal detecting. Learn't a great deal since then but still at a loss with this sand shifting malarky. Far too many factors involved to pin point it.

Hi Scratcher ::g, I've not been to Seaton for years, that's a helleva load of sand shifted there.
How did you get on?, many finds.
