Hi skint...
I have detected beaches for the length of time I've been detecting. My local beaches are covered in iron and bits of slag from local industry.
I used a cscope cs4pi for around four month and was tortured with iron and deep iron,so sold it on at a loss since I bought it new.
I have had minelab explorer two, then upgraded to the se pro version and this at present is my only machine....awesome on beach or land s I can't really ask for anymore.
In my opinion most people use minelab machines of one nature or another, can be an expensive machine but well worth it.
Hope this helps

Etrac on the beach imho rules!
wet sand/dry sand/land/ you got it all.
never kicks off or acts up.
good in the iron when you learn the tones.
all in all a great little package.
mines paid for itself 50 fold in two yrs.

PI bought 2nd hand, but found most local estuary beach hard, lots of iron. Sold on for same price (the cs4pi seem to hold a steady price 2nd hand at around £200).
Then went onto the Minelab Sov. Suits me fine, and if it hadn,t again see to hold a steady price around £350.
What I have learnt from MDetecting is people swap machines frequently trying to find the best working machine for them so good range available 2nd hand.
Take care with ebay! Extra extra care with gumtree and try before u buy! I went via the recognised dealers with the added bonus of a warranty and the prices did not differ much from ebay.

Best detector by far for the beach is a Minelab Sov, its half the price of a etrac and deeper!
the etrac is a better all round machine but on the beach the Sov reigns supreme.
Anyone that rates any other machine better has not used a Sov, PI machines are good but back breaking digging all that iron.
Get yourself a Sov!

It would help if you give some indication of your budget that you have available, its no good asking for suggestion's for a machine and people suggest say £500-£1000 detectors when your budget is maybe £300 max.

Hi mate, here is my input for what its worth, There are some very good detectors out there. As said Minelabs, & C-scopes pi machines. I have seen the Excalibur II used well on the beach. I use the Garrett AT Pro with good effect, When on holiday I see 3-5 detectorists every day on the beach I am on. All I can say I do well with my mid price machine. Would I choose it if I only detected on beaches
Yes I think I would, some will say its no good on the wet sand etc, well it is, I found an i phone in deep wet sand (youtube- uk beach hunting AT pro ) But it depends on what you want to spend and do you want a turn on and go machine or not. what ever you decide good luck and let us all know. Rob
