just wondering if anyone has had any experience with both machines in the river and if so how would you compare them

Not in the river but on the beach. Either way the ctx reigns over the excal due to the recovery speed near iron. If your river had no iron the excal would be ok but I wouldn't chance it in case you miss the find of a life time.
I would say the excal excels on a clean beach for punching through the sand but to tell the truth I didn't notice any difference in depth between the two.

ty,eventually I am thinking of upgrading,at this moment in time I use the etrac and occasionally the xcal which is in the process of being sold

Excalibur 2 and spend what you save on a holiday beach trip to spain or some where good :)
