shine "1800 lumens" at anything up close and light coloured and you will not be able to see for quite awhile.

Climbing and walking in the Snowdonia at night has taught me that total lumen is not the most important.

Be careful shining a torch back and forth on the beach that someone does not call the police or coast guard from a distance it will look like you are signaling

Its hard to see colours correctly with the very bright blue tint L.E.D.s

A natural or warm tint are much better for finding things.

I carry two torches one a 5 watt cree from Aldi which is great for general use. Not sure of the lumens but it will be between 200-300

5 watt seems to be the sweet spot for a 2 battery AA for brightness against battery life

The other is a homemade with an over driven L.E.D to give i very bright spot the a lens on the front to focus it to a very tight beam. Great for finding a path in the distance its like a laser shining on the mountain side but useless up close.

I have the cree light for my pushbike. It came with a headstrap too. When I get home I will dig out the box and give you all the details. Great light. 3 modes. £20 from eBay. I cannot rate it highly enough.

Also if you are on a budget homebase do an everready energiser head torch for about £15 with the batteries, I also have two of these and use these for both MD and fishing. I is a common misconception that the brighter the better, once your eyes acclimatise you will find you don't need a car head light strapped to your head

The alpkit manta or gamma headtorch take some beating for £15 posted( includes batteries)
I still own a Petzl from my fishing days but prefer the alpkit manta for detecting.
