A Welcome Glint Of Yellow For Boxing Day!!!

Post by Expat Aussie »

Here in Essex there has been plenty of rain lately and although I still have four ploughed fields to check over, they are now pretty well waterlogged and I know it will be boggy and hard going so I decided to revert to beach detecting for the moment. The question was which beach as I have recently been to Clacton, finding 82 coins in 4 hours, all modern decimals apart from one foreign.I settled for Frinton,a beach I have not visited for around 2 years. On arrival,I could see little had changed apart from slightly more sand piled up at the promenade as a result of the recent strong winds,There were plenty of people on the beach (tide was out) mostly dog walking though there were two horses being ridden near the low tide area and I counted six other detectors at work.
I started off by the wall where there was little interference and found a few coins including pre-decimals but a little further on came up against the steel reinforcement piling which played havoc with the detector so I moved down nearly to the low water line.Sand here very flat with very few signals.I was using the Minelab SE Professional with an 8" coil with discrim on and the first signal I had that I thought worth digging turned out to be a £1 coin at about 6" deep.It was then that I wished I had a larger coil however although there was one in the car I thought it would be better to press on rather than have a tiring climb up the cliff wasting valuable detecting time as well. A little further on I had a slightly `iffy` signal which I thought might be a dreaded pull ring however to my surprise I could see that magic yellow glint and realized that it was a ring.Later on back at home I identified it as a ladies 22 ct wedding band hallmarked London 1938.Incredibly less than three feet away another signal turned out to be a gents 9ct signet ring with a plain bloodstone.I don`t have a modern hallmark book but think it is Birmingham 1988.I think this is the first time that I have found 2 rings in the same session.Well chuffed to say the least!!! ::g That was about it apart from a well made dog identity disc that has the phone number on one side with the full address on the back so I shall chase that one up and post an update on it later.

Hi Expat

I have tried Frinton beach twice. Along the front of the stilted beach huts to the wall.
Funny thing is I found a dog tag there too. Few decimal coins and lots of melted aluminium rubbish. There seemed to be a cable running parallel to the beach about 70 yards out to a big radio mast beyond the wall that I detected time after time. Few fishing weights by the wall and not much more.
Didn't see any other people detecting but know people go there.
Well done on the rings, think when I went there had been a dump of sand following a gale. Lucky I found what I did.

An update on the dog identity disc............Last Sunday,I had a phone call from my detecting buddy Nigel,I told him about the session I had in Frinton, and that I was off to hopefully return the dog identity disc to it`s home.I guess Nigel got a touch of gold fever as he was keen to hitch a ride :)) It was easy to find the house thanks to Tom Tom,and at the destination was an old looking house. The owner ( a young guy) appeared at the door as I walked up the drive. He was very surprised to say the least when I told him I had found it with a metal detector on Frinton beach.Turns out it was lost sometime in the last two years and Samson is a large black labrador still very much alive and kicking. He was very appreciative to have his identity disc returned,so job well done ::g Turns out the house dates back to the 15th century.Would have been great to try some detecting there but could see that he would have disapproved of someone digging holes in his immaculate small garden!! Carried on after to Frinton where we both managed to find a few decimals and nothing much else, even so it was good as always to be out there swinging away with the prospect of maybe finding something memorable ::g
HH everyone and way 2014 produce some exceptional finds!!!!!!!!!!
