Weymouth and Portland area

Post by Phillcost »

Going down to the coast for a few days over new year and would love some tips on some good places to take out the detector.... Can blow out a few cobwebs...and probably a hangover or two....lol

Thinking of chesil beach or the main Weymouth beach....anyone got any locations that could be productive please?

Oh and a happy new year to you all.

Same to you Phil,to be honest I haven,t been to chesil or Weymouth for a few years but I used to go regular to fish as thats my main hobby. However if I end up going to detect down there apart from the main beaches, I ll try the sandy area behind chesil beach that,s on the right as you drive over the fleet road towards portland. There were always lots of people there wading swimming and walking, as its a peaceful area and quite shallow water so good for families. You could find some nice goodies and it wont be as searched out as the main beach around the town.Just drive across to portland and you, ::g ll see it on the right.Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for the tips..... Was begining to think my post wasn't visible...lol

I have quite often been wading there collecting cockles. Never thought about wading with the detector. I have a garrett ace 250 so I know it will be ok to use it in the shallow water. Maybe if the weather improves I'll be able to get down and have a look. There is also another little beach I have found down there.... Its at sandsfoot castle or the sailing club.... Had a few modern day coins off it in the summer but didn't total more than a quid.. And my son got knocked over by a dog off its lead!

Thanks again for the tip..... Angling is my main hobby too but it's slowly getting pushed aside by detecting...

Hi Phil,
As Russ says Chesil is certainly worth a try, particularly after the recent weather. Only thing is that long climb up over the stones. Always seems even worse on the way back!
Weymouth Bay has taken quite a bashing from the weather over the last few weeks, so who knows what might have been stirred up. Particularly down towards the harbour end. I find that my Ace 250 plays up a bit at Weymouth on the wet sand, but might be me. If you go further along towards the Preston side of Weymouth bay, they are currently using a digger to try to replace the beach by dragging stones and shingle back up. This is causing some interesting sand formations at waters edge.

Good luck and if you do decide to detect on Weymouth Bay and find loads of things, I will be very jealous, because I can't get down there for a week or so! :(( ;'h

Yes Phil the shallow area where you got cockles ,lots of people have swam there in the past as its safe and shallow, lots would set up picnics around the edges so prob some jewelry and coins to be had either wading, or on the sand after the tide has receded. All this talk has got me thinking I think I,ll pop down there soon to try it when there,s time Its a goo :)) d drive from wales tho.Good luck mate.

Hi mate this just might help make up your mind as to where to detect at Weymouth, some years ago I read an article about the regular gold coins turning up on chesil beach. Apparently a lot of ships have gone down on that stretch of coast , ie old sailing ships which carried bullion. People used to find coins among the pebbles eyes only , no detectors and this was achieved following stormy sea's.So I believe you have the perfect moment to try your luck on the pebbles.and of course you now have the advantage of a detector.best of luck , let us know how you get on? Happy New Year.Pete ::g 98; ::g 98;

Years ago My old friend Bill Irvine had a lot of quality finds from the Chesil Beach, he lived a few miles from Bridport, He and his wife were Whites Dealers. He probably sold a few machines to people on this forum

Thanks for all your replies.... I am now sat here hoping that the morning will be fine. I can't wait to get out and try chesil. The seas have been quite rough so who knows what may come ashore.... I'll keep you posted as soon as I can get out.... Might just brave the weather....just won't turn my back on the sea!

Well......the weather did not settle ..... Really strong winds and rough seas on chesil.... Went on another part of the beach and had a little look.... Two hours....£1.30 a fishing spinner and possibly a gold ring.... It's obviously been in the sea and sand for a while.... Needs a clean....not even sure it's gold....looks kind of gold and wedding band-ish....lol

Think there is a lot more to find.... Brother had a Spanish coin....1870 .... Has a lion with a shield on one side..and a seated person on the other.... Looks copper.... Can't really make out the writing ..... Good old google lol

Better luck tomorrow if this wind dies down.

Well..... The beach was lovely but with family in tow the best option was the main beach.... Nothing really found..... Seriously hoping the weather will improve enough to get on chesil tommorow but time is running out and the dreaded countdown to work means this will probably be my only chance to strike it lucky...... Got an invite to a club dig on Sunday..... All these options...and the weather is rubbish..lol
