As a general rule if say a river runs through farm land then both banks will be owned by someone and then you will have too approach these land owners,of course if they are owned by different land owners then i would think you would have too approach both of them. But if the land on both sides of the river is owned by the same land owner then of course you will only need the one permission.

I think it works on the basics that each bank has the right too half the rivers width,so if only one permission is granted then you would only be allowed the length of the river that the land owner owns and then half the width of the river.

That is how i understand the basics, just hope i have explained it so that you can understand it ::g

The finds will be in the ground not floating around. Therefore you still need the landowners permission. As previously the riverbed to a centre line is owned by the landowner of the bankside. They have responsibility for upkeep and management of the bank & the EA for the flow of the water.

They dont own the water but they own the bank rights and access to the water,a big differance.

I am lucky that i have access to a small river that runs through farmland that the farmer owns both banks, its only a small river but what makes this one exciting is that the great north road which is roman runs about 200mtrs by this river and as we are all aware romans use too make votive offering so the possibilty of finding items is good although not certain.

Yes mate,i do a little river detecting,i dont use anything special machine wise just a Minelab Musketeer on a long straight shaft with the control box on a harness around my neck, this will allow a depth of 3-4 feet which is more than enough, with a small 7inch coil so that i can swing the coil without much water resistance and a basic sand scoop, and chest high waders of course.

I also do magnet fishing as well but that will of course only pick up iron objects but the detecting side of it will pick up all metal, dont do it every week as its mainly a nice sunny days type of detecting, but the most important thing when river detecting is safety is paramount and you do have too take care and one bad move could be fatal.

Looking at getting a decent sand scoop this year as i plan on doing some beach work as well,a decent scoop is important when river or beach detecting.

It's not who owns the water ... but who owns the ground under the water... all other things being equal I would expect that the land owner whose land abutts one side of the river will own the ground half way across the river, and so on...
the basis for this argument is that rivers occasionally dry up, so in this situation it would not be anyones interest if ownership had not been pre-assigned. Also river beds sometimes hold valuable mineral deposits ... and fights could break out over ownership if there were not some fair, easily applyable rule..
Imagine there is no heaven, only sky above us.
