six-pence city

Post by Ian.B »

Hit the beach today with me detecting bud and came across a pre-decimal hotspot.
Managed about seventy coins between us of which over forty were sixpences, the rest made
up of pennys , h'pennys and thru'penny bits , with one florin. I also found a worn
G111 bull head shilling and a nice gold signet ring to cap it off.
All items were found at the top of the beach in a relatively small stretch,
which seemed to have been eroded away by the recent high tides and storms.
Why so many six-pences , who knows, answers on a postcard .
Cheers for looking

the surfit of sixpences may stem from the fact that this was the price of a donkey ride/ ice cream?? hence given to kids ... hence dropped !!! Thats why they call me sherlock!

Looks like you had a great time there, nice finds ::g It looks as though the sixpences are relatively modern in which case the surfeit of them maybe due to the fact that (as I remember in the late 50`s - early 60`s) shillings were not often seen in change due to the fact that most were used in the gas and electric meters ;))
