Looks like a fossil to me.
Never seen on like that. You do all sorts of odd shapes because you don't know at what angle the cross section is. First time a saw a simple shell cut at 45" it had me stumped

A few questions that will help ID:
a/ what is the size of the object?
b/ are pebbles of similar composition on the beach, or does this stand out from the rest?
c/ is the black substance organic? or have organic origins?
